Since clicking the window does not make it go away, I left a “close” button on the windows. I hope that the ” x ” sign is universally understood, and lets users know what that button does… (Yes, Marcelo, this is me being ironic, my friend 🙂 ).
You know very well that I prefer to be able to translate everything, including program buttons. We shouldn’t stick to the “standards” made by Microsoft in Windows in using images that are supposed to be understandable to all people. If the “X” button is for “Close Window” or “Close Program”, then why don’t you let me translate it?
As you are the ones who write the programming codes and not me, so I can only translate what is allowed by you programmers.– – – – –

Você sabe muito bem que eu prefiro poder traduzir tudo, inclusive os botões dos programas. Nós não devemos nos prender aos “padrões” feitos pela Microsoft no Windows no uso de imagens que supostamente sejam compreensíveis para todas as pessoas. Se o botão “X” serve para “Fechar a Janela” ou “Fechar o Programa”, então por que você não me deixa traduzi-lo?

No! that script name was created for me, as a side joke – I used the “yad” part so I know it’s the version that uses yad, and “touchy” is a play on words (that makes no sense in portuguese, just in English – “Touch” is something related to touch, but “Touchy” is something or someone that’s is too sensitive 🙂
I like the touchpad-toggle name myself!As for icons- we have several, available by default – I tried this one, that’s transparent:
/usr/share/icons/Adwaita/48×48/devices/input-touchpad-symbolic.symbolic.png and also this one /usr/share/icons/papirus-antix/48×48/apps/touchpad.png
(easier to see, on a dark background, I guess)Note: Since I do not like to see text when a nice icon will suffice, I’m playing with using yad “notification” with only the corresponding icon, nothing more. Like the original notification, it goes away after 3 seconds or if you click it. In this version the only text that needs to be localized it the warning saying no Touchpad was detected…
I know marcelo likes to see text, so users can read it and be fully aware of what that information means… But… well: if the user just clicked/launched something that’s called “touchpad toggle” and a notification appears on the screen, showing the image of a touchpad with a small cross on it, how dumb would you have to be to not understand what that means? Dumb enough, probably, to wonder why a tv without sound has that image of a speaker crossed out, maybe? But, well, use the one folks you like better (or the original one, that uses real system notifications)…
I’m trying to attach that version of the script, that shows only the icon referring to the touch-pad being on or off.
Edit: and while I was writing this, you @marcelocripe wrote that post about liking to have more text on GUI’s… How ironic.
Marcelo, you can translate anything you want, but the person that creates the program or script does so using the style he/she likes best. I’m a minimalist. For me, a picture is really worth a thousand words. And I’ve not really used a Microsoft product, on a computer that’s mine, for many years now, I couldn’t care less about what MS thinks looks nice. But I do like nice design ideas, no matter who creates them. I’m commenting just on why my scripts look the way they look, I’m not discussing localization- like I said I wouldn’t. In conclusion: you sometimes have no text to translate in the scripts I create because I, as their creator, think no text should be there. It’s as easy as that!P.

@techore – I’m curious about how a tiling window manager treats these yad windows- if you can, I would like to know about that 🙂
Edit: To do: even if this project does stick with the original script, that depends on system notifications, it should check if xinput is installed, and if not, warn users to install it (or offer to do so). If there’s demand for it, I can add that feature to my version of the script.
Edit2: Of course, that, if the script and it’s .desktop file are packaged as a.deb file, that would not be needed, since xinput can be declared a dependency (it’s just about 100kb, so it’s nothing special).
But since I tend to conserve resources, usually my scripts do not install any dependency unless the user needs it – think about this: if this script came out of the box with antiX, it would be useless for desktop computer users… why would it’s dependencies be taking up space in those user’s computers? I think this is a nice addition to antiX, and should be included, but also, that it should not include the dependencies- they should be installed only if the user needs to use this feature…P.

I already have my own short Bash script to toggle the Touchpad on and off, but I allowed the Touchpad to be enabled, then used your tool to toggle back and forth between the synaptics keypad active or disabled. I usually have a wired USB mouse device, so I generally disable it; nevertheless I used the functionality of your script and it effectively toggles the synaptics keypad for touch or no response so it works for me. Thanks!

If “touchpad-toggle.sh” can work depending only on Bash’s Yad, it will be the best option in consuming less disk space.
With antiX base and full, I agree with you and @PPC. dunst is used for notifications on antiX dwm Unofficial, but that doesn’t mean it is a good fit for the antiX Official releases or spins.

All window managers use window attributes to determine the best method of managing windows. Typically, floating managers use “hints” to determine size and, potentially, location. The difference with a tiling window manager is hints are generally ignored. So if you want a window to float and placed the north-right quadrant or center, a rule is used which identifies the window based on its attributes. Commonly class is used but title or name are used for granularity.
yad’s class is yad. Originally, I just grabbed the class yad to float and center, however, yad-volume and yad-calendar got centered instead of floating at the bar when clicked using antiX dwm. To avoid all yad applications from floating center, I had to use window title.
Hopefuly, that illustrates the challenge. The one that drove me nuts is someone used a variable in a window title so it wasn’t consistent. Fortunately, rules can be matched on a partial string, but really? a variable? 😀
It just shows that you cannot ever *know* what your darn users (me) are going to do. You cannot be prepared for the unexpected. Right?
@PPC, execute ‘xprop’ and select a window to see the properties (attributes) of a window.

Many thanks PPC, testing with the “touchy-yad-v2.zip” version was very successful. Now the only dependency needed for “touchpad-toggle” (I renamed “touchy-yad-v2.zip” to “touchpad-toggle”) to work on full 64-bit antiX 22 is the “xinput” package.
In the attached file “touchpad-toggle_18-02-2023.zip” are the “touchy-yad-v2.zip” I renamed to “touchpad-toggle”, the file “touchpad-toggle.desktop”, template file “touchpad- toggle.pot” and the translation “pt_BR” (“.po” and “.mo”). Even though PPC removed the “Touchpad enabled” and “Touchpad disabled” messages, the “No touchpad detected” error message (PPC text) needs to be translated to the “pt_BR” speaking user.
In the attached file “Test of touchpad-toggle 18-02-2023.zip” are the images captured from the test and the text file containing all the commands in the terminal for each step of the test that I did. The “touchpad-toggle.desktop” file is working perfectly.
Now we have two versions that work perfectly.

Muito obrigado PPC, os testes com a versão “touchy-yad-v2.zip” foram muito bem-sucedidos. Agora a única dependência necessária para o “touchpad-toggle” (eu renomeiei o “touchy-yad-v2.zip” para “touchpad-toggle”) funcionar no antiX 22 full de 64 bits é o pacote “xinput”.
No arquivo anexo “touchpad-toggle_18-02-2023.zip” estão o “touchy-yad-v2.zip” eu renomeei para “touchpad-toggle”, o arquivo “touchpad-toggle.desktop”, arquivo de modelo “touchpad-toggle.pot” e a tradução “pt_BR” (“.po” e “.mo”). Mesmo que o PPC tenha removido as mensagens “Touchpad enabled” e “Touchpad disabled”, a mensagem de erro “No touchpad detected” (texto do PPC) precisa ser traduzida para o usuário falante do “pt_BR”.
No arquivo anexo “Teste do touchpad-toggle 18-02-2023.zip” estão as imagens capturadas do teste e o arquivo de texto contendo todos os comandos no terminal de cada etapa do teste que eu fiz. O arquivo “touchpad-toggle.desktop” está funcionando perfeitamente.
Agora nós temos duas versões que funcionam perfeitamente.
