        Use shred.

          Good evening,

Thank you for your answer : I have read the other topics and I have pressed that in my terminal : # shred -fuvz -n9 /dev/sda1 ( + press enter ) but there is no result at all !

          Thank you,

Did you do this from a live CD or DVD? It is better to do this from outside the installed operating system.
Have you checked the name of all the partitions you want to delete? If you want to delete a whole disk, you need to give the disk name.
            sudo blkid
            or
            sudo fdisk -l
will tell you the partition paths.

If you want to format the whole disk, if the disk name is in /dev/sda, it would look like:
            sudo shred -n 2 -z -v /dev/sda
where -n2 is to make two passes, -z is that you want to fill with zeros each pass, and -v is to display the progress.

Be carefull when selecting the correct disk and not deleting the a different partition or disk. You could lose everything

Is there a benefit to shred vs other methods?
Last time I erased drives it has been using hdparm and/or dd. hdparm for ata secure erase (with ssd drives; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_state_drive/Memory_cell_clearing), dd for writing over the drives with /dev/urandom.

Though that is if the drive is going to be reused, otherwise it would be removed and physically destroyed.

                Hi
How do you remove the hard drive ? It is maybe the best solution as the laptop won’t be reused…!
Thank your for the details !

If you remove the cover from your system, removing a few screws, plus the ribbon cable connection to the disk will allow you to remove it.

Let me caution you though: even if you physically remove the disk, unless you smash it into unrecognizable metal it may be possible for someone else to access the information unless it is removed prior to taking the disk out.

Xecure mentioned shred elsewhere; writing zeros or ones in alternating patterns many times is the best way to protect information.

Take a screw driver out and start experimenting.
If the whole laptop is not going to be reused then it can not hurt to break it (other than maybe a bit of time) and you will learn a little about how things are put together. In the future you may find it easier to do such tasks, maintenance tasks such as clean out dirt/dust, add ram, change drives, etc to fix them.

When you get the drive out and take it apart the magnets in an hdd are the best fridge magnets you will own 😉
And the platter is easily cut up with tin snips; or you can find more creative methods for some enjoyment. I imagine putting the platters an old microwave may yield a spectacular light show though I have never tried.

As Brian says, using a tool to remove/overwrite data from the drive before physically destroying it would add an extra layer.
