This machine is an old compaq presario p4 with 845 onboard video
and wouldn’t get higher than 1024×768 resolution no matter what.
I had to add the “nomodeset” option to the grub boot line to get
1280×1024 screensize. After checking if it worked.
I did this to make it permanent after installing.
1: I edited the/etc/default/grubfile as root using
2:sudo leafpad /etc/default/grubin the terminal and adding it to
the defaults lineGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"
3: then saved the file and ran asudo update-grubin the terminal and
it seems to work good at higher resolution now.
this is on 17.4.1-full-stretch release
I did this after installing — not sure how to do this on the live disk.May 20, 2019 at 1:09 pm #21872ModeratorBobC
::When it boots from flashdrive type nomodeset and it will appear in the boot command string below, save if you want, or not, then press enter to boot

Maybe someone will try on persistence/etc if it worksIt ought to work with persistence, though I have to admit that I did not experiment with that particular feature; I have plenty of USB devices but I generally start up images that are installed one of several distributions.
Dolphin Oracle has tried out quite a few scenarios and has offered quite a few video examples demonstrating how to accomplish various things. Even if he hasn’t done this one, he’d be a leading candidate to share it in a video if he is available in the near future.
I nominate D.O. for such things; excellent work!

::Maybe persistence, but this old of machine doesn’t support booting
a usb … not sure if any of my other 810-915 boards do
either. this fixes the resolution on an actual install
to the hard drive. And so far almost 12 hours uptime with
web browsing in palemoon with no problems on the updated
4.9.176 kernel. -
