Well, i really liked how easy it was to install this OS. Am very disappointed to find the /home is not located on a separate partition.

Have been going at this for a couple of days now / searching the forums and banging on the lappy but still can’t get this thing to connect to the house wifi. It will connect via ethernet, but not wifi.

i ran the command to see if it had a wifi card and evidently it does. This is a Toshiba Satellite, 32bit lappy.

Is there a FAQ or something for this? On other OSs i’ve just hit the icon in the system tray, selected the network and popped in the password, but…

Have a happy afternoon, stay safe and thanks for keeping 32bit machines alive! 🙂

        When you go to
Control Centre > Network > Connman (Wifi) (may say something different depending if you are using FULL or BASE)
what do you see? Does an icon come up in the system tray? Can you move a slider in WIFI from off to ON? If so, can you see your network appear? Can you scan for networks?

There is a lot to go through depending on the version of antix (Full vs base), if you have already configured ceni to connect to wifi, or you have done so with Connman, etc.

Did you set it up this way when you installed?
The installer asks if you want to set up a separate /home (custom mode)

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Wow, you guys are fast! Thanks a lot for answering so quickly!

Yes, i think i remember seeing something about /home during the installation, but was so used to the install process of another OS, that it never occurred to me that this one might not use this as Standard…

There is some sort of icon in the system tray and i can turn off ethernet and turn on wifi with this icon, but i don’t see that it “searches” for IP points. There seems to be Ceni and WPA Supplicant Configuration available in Control Center and i’ve tried both but to no avail so far.

Again, thank for replying so quickly, stay safe and have a wonderful afternoon! 🙂

I suggest going to the main menu and change theme to clearview blue, then you will be able to see wifi icons better

try left click on wifi icon and hold down to see if list appears

did you try using ceni to set it up? not sure if that will cause trouble for using connman from icon.

also, go to a terminal and run

              inxi -Fxz

and paste in the results. it says what hardware you have and what you are running

Dear Bob: Thanks for replying and offering to help! i changed the theme to clearview and can now see the icons a little better. i’m using ethernet at the present and can see the icon with the two arrows very clearly. When i left click i get no list of networks… Oh, this cannot be. With a dark DE background i can see what looks like a white window with an up arrow at the top and a down arrow at the botton. It appears that there is some info bet. these two arrows but the line has such a short height that it isn’t shown..

My guess is that maybe you tried using Ceni and WPA_GUI to connect, and possibly that might leave Connman in a condition where it doesn’t connect.

Maybe one of the others on this thread can suggest how to get it working again.

Yes, BobC, that’s probably what happened. This really semms like a great OS. It’s too bad that getting it to connect to the net is so difficult. Thanks again for trying to help and

Ok, well, you are lucky to have wired internet available to use.

If I was to suggest, I would say connect your ethernet, and get all packages up to date.

                            from a terminal run

                            sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then I would shutdown, disconnect the ethernet cable, and then and reboot without it

once rebooted, with wifi only, don’t try ceni, try connman… from another thread…

                            BobC

I downloaded and installed 19.2 386 base, and tried ceni and had the same issues AA BB had.

I then tried again, but didn’t install, worked from the flashdrive, and instead of using ceni I figured out how to get connman running, configured and working.

Nothing but ceni and wpa_gui appear on the network tab of control centre. That might lead someone to click one of those and get trapped like AA BB. This time I didn’t try it.

Then I found Connman Setup on the Internet menu. At first I didn’t think it ran. What’s weird is that you can barely see the wifi control down at the bottom next to the volume because its black on almost black, so I started it twice by mistake. I right clicked it and wifi was turned off so I turned it on. But that didn’t fix it. But I found that if I left click that icon and hold it down the list comes up and you can mouse to the connection. Somehow I got it to let me enter the password and it connected.

I hope that helps. I’m no real wifi expert.

If I change the theme to Clearview Blue Medium I can see the Wifi icon much better. I went back into the flashdrive system, and its hard to see, but it comes up immediately with connman running down next to the volume icon, so if you try to run ceni, both will be running, and it won’t work.

I did not find a way to get ceni working, not that it doesn’t exist, but I didn’t find it. That’s all for me for this one. I’m going to see if I can get my respin to run in 32 bit mode for the old PC’s here. You never lose till you give up trying…

For the benefit of other antiX users struggling with wifi connectivity,
here`s my summary of the instructions by BobC
(which is the only way I`ve found so far that connects after antiX 19.2.1 multiple boots )

                            from a liveUSB run 19.1.2 base 386

DO NOT click ceni OR wpa_gui on any of the menus
Instead, on the Internet menu, click Connman Setup

You`ll barely see the wifi icon on the taskbar, at left of the volume icon
R-click this icon, and turn wifi ‘on’ and wired ‘off’
Next, L-click the same icon and hold it, until a list of wifi access points appear, then mouse to your AP and enter your passphrase

Next use the antix installer to install antiX 19.2.1 on your HDD…your wifi setup will carry over to the install.
When the install is complete, boot the newly installed and
your wifi connection will automatically be ‘UP’ after the boot completes, without using taking additional steps or commands

If that doesn’t work, post again. I’m no expert, but thats was what worked for me. There are others on this thread much better with this than I.

Dear BobC. Success! We got it to work – by reinstalling and using connman as mentioned above. At the same time we set up /home on its own partition. As a humble suggestion… antiX might consider the possibility of offering this additional option during installation – without the option to Format the disk, since it’s so time-consuming (and complicated for new users). Just allocate /root with maybe 15 Gb and the rest for /home or whatever you feel is a good “mix”.

Anyway, thanks again for your patience and for helping. Stay safe and

I do believe that antiX does offer a way to create a home partition and it definitely offers a way to reuse previously created home directory and file systems.

I’ll verify this. If true, maybe there are ways to make the choices more obvious. In any case we do have documentation and tutorial works.

Please add any suggestions for making it more understandable without creating too much complexity. antiX favors small and nimble over offering every possible configuration. There are large distribution systems available to meet this case for free software users.

I also think there is a way to reuse /home but never do that.

I install a program called aptik and its GUI from .deb, let it make a backup, and then put those into a Live-usb-storage directory on my install flashdrive, and then use it to restore over top of the standard /home install. Perhaps a standard antiX installed program like Luckybackup can do that too, but I didn’t try that.
