      Hi,
      I noticed that there are many chess enthusiasts in this forum.
      I also noticed that some use wine to install windows chess games in antiX.

      I also use wine to install my windows chess games.

      However, I have not been able to figure out how to install one of my favorite windows chess applications on antiX.
      This application is called: Guess the Move by Fred Mellender. There is also a companion chess program called YATT (Yet Another Tactics Trainer). This program is also written by Fred Mellender.

      https://sites.google.com/view/fredm/home

      This Guess the Move program rates every move that I make and alerts me if I have made a gigantic mistake. It compares my chess move to the pgn chess move as well as against the engine chess move. I think it is a great chess teaching program.

      I was wondering know how to install Guess the Move and YATT in antiX?

      Thank you.

        Dear,
        you choose the best option, opening a new thread.
        As far as your problem is concerned you probably know that WINE means: Wine Is Not (an) Emulator.
        That means that the majority of the win programs that work through Wine are the result of the work of some guy that adapted all the stuffs in order to make the win program working under linux.
        According to my experience you have to consider a lot of variables:
        – type of win, for which the program was originally designed;
        – 32 or 64 bit;
        – in some cases with a certain release of wine the “emulation” works and with others not.

        I tried your link tonight and did some try to install your preferyte chess tutor both under antix 21 and ubuntu 18.04, (both 64 bit). Unfortunately with no avail.

        Next week end I’ll have some more time to make some other try.

        btw: what is your level? (e.g. fide rating)
        I personally dont like very much this kind of programs that often gives you a solution only based on tactical evaluation and not strategic

        Kind regards
        m

          Hi @madibi,

          Thank you for giving me some suggestions about wine and windows programs. That chess program that I was talking about was built with dot.net framework. I have not been able to properly install dot.net framework properly in antiX.

          What is my rating? Not good. I mostly play chess with my kids. I taught my kids how to play chess many years ago. Now, I cannot beat them. My oldest son is active in chess.com, and his recent rating is about 2100. This last few years, I have not been able to be competitive with him.

            I did it!!!

            My system: antix 21 – with FT10 🙂 thx to PPC

            1. I installed wine from the “Installa Programmi” located in the tray
            2. After having downloaded and extracted the folder in an “ad hoc” place (in my pc the folder named “tmp”,
            I went in the folder home/YOURNAME/tmp/GuessTheMove.exe, and changed the attributes as executable
            3. I did a right click on the “GuessTheMove.exe” file and pressed “execute with wine”.

            Et voilĂ : the job is done and you’ll be happy 🙂

            In case the above mentioned solution is working for you, please write “solved” in the title of your thread

                Hi @madibi,

                I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I get this error message:

                $ wine '/home/jakersfan/Downloads/GuessTheMove/ChessGuessTheMove.exe'
                0009:err:mscoree:CLRRuntimeInfo_GetRuntimeHost Wine Mono is not installed

                  I also tried to install mono-complete. That does not solve the problem.

                  I also tried to install the windows wine-mono.msi using wine. That does not solve the problem either.

                    may be that the best try is:
                    1. erase the directory with the program’s download
                    2. uninstall wine
                    3. download the program
                    4. extract the program in a directory convenient for you
                    5. give the rights to the file ChessGuessTheMove.exe
                    6. re-install wine : FROM THE ANTIX APP MANAGER THAT YOU CAN FIND IN THE TRAY
                    7. right click on the ChessGuessTheMove.exe and tell it to use wine

                    (resumé: keep it clean and then try again )

                    pls let me know

                      Hi @madibi,
                      Some success. I have never used packageinstaller to install my programs. I have always been doing it by terminal. When I installed wine from the packageinstaller, I noticed that it also installed the necessary wine-mono and also the wine-gecko, winehg-staging, and wine-staging. I suppose those are necessary to run this chess programs. I have been able to run many chess programs without these particular wine programs.

                      I was able to launch the chess Guess the Move program. Thank you so much for the instructions. Please see the picture.

                      But every time I make a move in the chess program, I get this error window as see in the picture. Do you see this unhandled exception error when you make a move in your system when you make a move in this chess program?

                        dear,
                        I’m happy that you could install the program.
                        Please remember that this is not the original 100% that you get under win, may be something doesnt work 100%.
                        In case you consider that the prob is solved, please add SOLVED to the title of the thread 🙂
