Hello Friends!
Is there a proper way to install virtualbox?
My system:
Kernel: 5.10.57-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64
bits: 64
Desktop: IceWM 2.8.0
Distro: antiX-21_x64-full Grup Yorum 31 October 2021I tried the Package Installer but it does nothing. It runs apt-get update then opens the terminal for a split second then I get “Process finished” , but virtualbox does not seem to be installed.
Has anyone tried it yet?
Thank you for your time.

::Hi,
my experience is that installing VirtualBox fails in antiX other than stable.
You may follow the others steps mentioned in the guide/how-to:
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-to-install-applications-2020-version/I prefer using CLI tools,
1) ‘sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade’
2) ‘sudo apt install virtualbox’
That should be all.June 16, 2022 at 1:24 pm #84666Memberkaye

I followed your procedure, got this:
sudo apt install virtualbox [sudo] password for kaye: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. ::@kaye
I’m sorry to be so negative, but when I get those kind of messages:Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:The following packages have unmet dependencies:
virtualbox : Depends: python3 (< 3.8) but 3.9.2-3 is to be installed
Depends: python3.7 but it is not installable
Depends: libgsoap-2.8.75 but it is not installable
Depends: libpython3.7 (>= 3.7.0) but it is not installable
Depends: libvpx5 (>= 1.6.0) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.I was never able to recover the situation (Also if there are a lot of howto that try to explain what to do). Please note that this issue appears also with other programs.
But: in case you can purge the installation that you just did (without damaging your system), and install from “package installer” (the rectangular icon in your tray, with a down arrow), may be that you can save the day.
In antiX it is always advisable to install the programs in this way, being synaptic or “sudo apt install WHATEVER” only the 2nd choice.May be other more expert than me may give you some better advice.
Good luck 🙂
mPS: Just in the spirit to help you, I’ve just installed virtualbox in my system using “package installer” with zero problems

Yes, I just did it with the packageinstaller, it installed fine for me.
You might want to show us your system information so we can try to figure out what’s going wrong. You can copy and paste the output of ‘inxi -zv8’ here in code tags.

::The problem is caused by this command;
1) ‘sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade‘.
This is wrong in this case of installing a ‘new’ package.
The correct command would be:
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
or
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgradeLook in man apt where this is explained.
Since I update my antix21 system with dist-upgrade from the beginning, the simulation here looks like this:$ sudo apt install virtualbox -s Paketlisten werden gelesen… Fertig Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut… Fertig Statusinformationen werden eingelesen… Fertig Die folgenden zusätzlichen Pakete werden installiert: libexecs0 libgsoap-2.8.104 liblzf1 libpython3.9 libqt5opengl5 libqt5x11extras5 libvde0 libvdeplug2 libvncserver1 vde-switch vde-wirefilter vde2 vdeplug virtualbox-dkms virtualbox-guest-additions-iso virtualbox-qt Vorgeschlagene Pakete: vde2-cryptcab qemu-system Die folgenden NEUEN Pakete werden installiert: libexecs0 libgsoap-2.8.104 liblzf1 libpython3.9 libqt5opengl5 libqt5x11extras5 libvde0 libvdeplug2 libvncserver1 vde-switch vde-wirefilter vde2 vdeplug virtualbox virtualbox-dkms virtualbox-guest-additions-iso virtualbox-qt 0 aktualisiert, 17 neu installiert, 0 zu entfernen und 0 nicht aktualisiert. ::Sorry, I messed up the command.
Also, if you have any additional repository enabled, the discussion may benefit from posting list of your repositories (probably already contained in the command suggested by @andyprough but it fails to print the repositories on my PC [smxi-inxi-antix: 0.5.1] for some reason).- This reply was modified 10 months, 3 weeks ago by sybok.

::As you can read in the neighboring thread, anti removed the readability of /etc/apt/sources.list.d in antiX21 on the way to the Clicki-Bunti-Distri.
Thus inxi -r can not display that either. Here is a picture of the repo’s:

To stay on topic, this has nothing to do with the repo’s either. You should study the difference between apt upgrade vs apt dist-upgrade/full-upgrade in man apt.

::I decided to reinstall antiX on my hard drive, but here are some things you may want to know:
My antiX live USB has persistence and has brave browser installed. The reinstalled antiX on my hard drive also has brave browser. I assume this is normal?

::1. Change your antiX repo since the https://mirror.pregi.net isn’t up to date.
You can use Repo-manager to do this. Try this one: http://it.mxrepo.comhttps://antixlinux.com/mirmon-packages/
2. sudo apt update
3. Upgrade to the latest
sudo apt dist-upgrade4. Try installing virtualbox via Package Installer

::Now this excites me, male could you please stick to the facts on the forum, the mirror kaye uses is not up to date.
Also there has not been any etc/apt/sources.list on antiX since long, long ago and for sure antiX is not on the way to any clicky-bunti-distro.What a bollocks.June 17, 2022 at 8:29 am #84709Anonymous
::Oh, dear, caprea, what have I done? Why are you so upset?
-Fact is that @sybok and I were talking about the use of apt and the difference between apt upgrade and apt dist-upgrade/full-upgrade.
-Fact is that anti gives the instruction to apt update && apt dist-upgrade to upgrade the system.
-Fact is that sybok; caprea; h2; male noticed the missing output of the active repo’s in inxi -r noticed.
-Fact is that anti says he removed the prerequisites for it.
-Fact is that I thought only caprea knew the meaning of a ‘cliki-bunti-distri’, which was a mistake. I apologize for the remark of a ‘cliki-bunti-distri’.
I am waiting for B.M. to remove his rating of “insults”.

Did you follow these recommendations?
Please do so and then if there are remaining issues we can address them.
I was running antiX for most of the day yesterday and experienced no issues.
Please follow each step, then provide the response to each of them.
Thanks
