Make a backup of your files (copy your important files to a separate USB pendrive) and reinstall antiX again.
You can preserve your home partition (if you created it originally).

Next time you need to change the antix.list repo DON’T MANUALLY EDIT IT and use REPO MANAGER from the control Centre.

I’m sorry for doing this, and I would like to know what not to do took it all. so as not to reproduce this formatting loop that I do every month for my computer and smartphone. Thank you all.

Seeing that you use snap programs, maybe you should think of using MX linux with systemd.

Advantages of non-systemd antiX: fast, less resource hungry, simple, reliable, can work on live USB as a portable computer.
Advantages of systemd based OSs: more software compatibility (like snaps), most programs will work on it and most tutorials work with it.
MX Linux has both options. systemd and Sysvinit (no-systemd), so you can switch between one and the other. If you need snaps, some VPN that only work with systemd, follow a lot of tutorials that require systemctl and such, you are better off with MX linux, as they will support systemd and can better help if systemd makes things complicated.

So, decide what is best for you based on what you have and what you need.

              Hi i’m on a fresh install of this : antiX-19.3_x64-full.iso and it’s amd64 or I wrong.

So I need to install steam; but this is only i386 packages; do you know if I need to install or reconfigure my startup repos for this distro ? On synaptics or in commande line ? To choose, because he said me an repos from china. Like :

              https://mirror.freedif.org/MXLinux/repo

And of course, I don’t know how to install only amd64 packages, thank you !

x64 is amd64, so yes. you are in the right one-

antiX comes with apps to do things. USE THEM.

                1. To change the repo mirrors: Control Centre > Maintenance > Repo manager (see left on my image). You can let it find the fastest Debian mirror and manually select the antiX repo mirror you want.

                2. To install steam: Control Centre > System > Package installer and search for Steam (see right side of the image).

antiX is easier if you use the tools it already provides.

I seem to have never installed steam, as I didn’t know. Not much of a gamer.
It seems it is normal for steam to be 32bits? Probably that is the reason they were not happy with Ubuntu’s decision.

Anyway, the biggest problem you had on your previous install wasn’t the 32 bits packages per se, but the combination of systemd:32bits running (and controlling) a 64bits antiX. It shouldn’t happen this time.

On 64 bits systems, 32 bit packages can coexist with 64 bits ones, but if there is a mix of them controlling your boot and the launching of application, there is the problem. Now that systemd won’t control your system, there shouldn’t be any danger installing steam, wine or other 32 bits applications.

                          sudo apt install steam

Steam is only available as 32-bit. So it brings in those dependencies. (It’s not an antiX thing; it’s the company that produces it that is only making a 32-bit version.)

                          confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

Like Xecure said- 32bits packages can coexist with 64bits one (on a 64 bits OS).
I’ve installed steam a while ago, using package installer- that simply takes care of everything for you, and I don’t recall if it installed 32 bits packages… If it installs 32bits packages, it’s because they are needed… Are you still trying to install from the terminal? Why not follow the advice given and use the right tool for the job- Package installer? Is something is available from Package installer, use it to perform the instalation- use only synaptic or “apt” if it’s not available there.

If you have to install 32bits packages for any given application, follow the steps provided on that particular application install instructions…

                            Recommendation:
Don’t try to reinvent the wheel – anticapitalista took the time to create an automated way to install over 100 apps, using Package Installer- why complicate things, when all you have to do is just point and click? Many apps, like firefox, Chrome, Steam, WINE, Java and LibreOffice, VLC and Gimp latest versions are all available on Package Installer

                            EDIT Recommendation 2:
The OP seems to keep trying to break antiX – I have no problem with that- it how we learn how stuff works- but doing that and then asking for help on the forum seems a waste of time- do that on a Virtual Machine or Live System.
Also read the sticky posts, mainly aimed for newbies and how to install stuff on antiX- it’ll save you a lot of pain- first learn the basics, then try the harder stuff…

                            P.

I think using apt (or one of its variations) is fine; *** if you choose that approach, do sudo apt-get update FIRST, then try apt-cache search “pattern”, replacing pattern with a short name that may be an app or an app description. Using synaptic to search for packages is a legitimate way; using package installer is ‘another legitimate way’.

What I would *hesitate* to do is to add additional repositories to our existing list unless you really know what you are doing; another repository *might” conflict with our repositories unless you thoroughly understand what is in it, and are prepared with backups, etc, if it does something undesirable to your system.

The point about the package installer is a good one though too. As stated, plenty of work has gone into the effort to make it easy to find commonly used software, so unless you do know what you are doing and you want to “own” every aspect of your work, package installer is a very good, useful tool.

What programs does he need that antiX doesn’t have available? If he has any that will break antiX there is no point messing with it, and he is better off to find a distro that has what he wants already available.

If he is going to run antiX, PPC is correct that he should use package installer to install anything it has that he needs, and then without changing repos he should carefully install any other packages that he needs with apt or synaptic.
