      I was trying to edit the icewm keys and the file was locked, so I switched to another desktop without paying attention and clicked on jwm.
      now there is no right-click menu and only a very minimalistic menu on the bottom left, which does not have Desktop menu.
      how do I get back to icewm?
      Thanks

        Normal click on the desktop, Log out. In the SLIM log-in screen, hit F1 until you can see any icewm option again and log back in.
        EDIT: If you cannot log out at all, go to tty1 (Control+Alt+F1), log in as your normal user, and run
        sudo killall jwm
        That will stop jwm and force a logout. Then, you can F1 to icewm.

        Is this the computer with a separate home partition? When you copied the .icewm folder to your home (from /etc/skel), did you copy them as normal user or as root user? I hope you did it as normal user (as this will make it so you don’t require extra permissions to edit them).

        If you are going to switch in the future to a different Window manager, make sure you copy the window manager folder from /etc/skel, so it is already configured before you switch.

          You can also try from terminal
          /usr/local/lib/desktop-session/desktop-session-menu-window ignore-settings

          or go to appselect in menu and type other desktops

          It will bring you to a GUI for changing desktops.

            @Xecure
            you are correct I copied with sudo. However, i did not realize that was the problem and thought this lock is due to me running icewm while trying to edit the file, so i hoped to unlock it by switching the desktop.
            still learning.

              I have tried overlaying home directories before a long time ago, and got into a mess just like you 🙂

              You are lucky to have Xecure being nice and helping you fix it.

              I suppose we don’t learn as much by taking the defaults, LOL
