I need to download some files from google drive and when I use the google interface nothing happens. I click download and there is an instant popup in the lower left, which disappears too fast. I look in Downloads and find nothing. I searched the entire ~ with find and still nothing. I try to right click on the image in Firefox hoping to e able to save as, but the only option is ‘add comment’. I changed firefox preference to always ask where to save and it still does not ask when I click download.
is there away to link to google drive as in gnome desktops where the drive will show in Caja? this is done in gnome online accounts in ubuntu.
thank you.

::Hi @stephenbbb,
Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.
I don’t know if I was able to correctly understand the translation for my language, but what is “google interface”?

This does not happen with the internet browsers I have tested: Chromium, Opera and Google Chrome.
You can install the above web browsers using the “Package Installer” program located on the anti-toolbar on the Rox-IceWM desktop.
I hope you can understand the text translated by the internet translator into the English language.

::If you want google drive to mount as if a directory, then use PPC’s tool: https://github.com/PPC-scripts/access_cloud
If you seem to have problems downloading from the browser, try first downloading something simple (right-click you avatar, open image in a new tab and right click and save the file). See if the file downloads or not (I think this could be related, as lgj100 mentions, to a mis-configuration of firefox, as it may be using a configuration from your home folder, that was set up with a different firefox version). Try with a different browser.

so there is no way to get to that by using gnome accounts? in Mate even though the desktop is not gnome there is a simple workaround and after installing gnome-control-center then everything works. see this:
xfce desktopwhen I tried that I got:
**
ERROR:../shell/cc-shell-model.c:458:cc_shell_model_set_panel_visibility: assertion failed: (valid)

::@stephenbbb – I’m not sure if there’s “no way”- if you install gnome-control-center and it’s file manager (and all the dependencies they need to work).
antiX does not, by default use Desktop Enviroments, only the (much) lighter Window Managers.
Xecure told you exactly how to access Google Drive (or almost any other Cloud service) from your default file manager- download the mentioned script, make it executable, run it – it will ask to install the dependencies, that it offers to do automatically. Do so and restart the script. It will automatically allow to configure Google Drive- do so, enter your Google Credentials in the web browser and allow “rclone” to access your cloud drive. Now that the initial configuration is done, double click “Google Drive” in the main window of the script, to access it. No “gnome account” is needed…
Another solution is installing rclone and then install rclone-gui, and manually configure Google Drive, using the cli…
But feel free to try to install all the applications you want!P.

::ERROR:../shell/cc-shell-model.c:458:cc_shell_model_set_panel_visibility: assertion failed: (valid)
This error is for the gnome-control-center I assume. This will only properly work on Gnome based Desktop Environments (like Gnome and Mate, Mate is a fork of the original Gnome 2, because a lot of people weren’t happy with the transition to Gnome 3 and the new changes it brought).
You can try tricking gnome-control-center to think you are running Gnome with:
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME gnome-control-center
But that won’t help much, as many functions will be a bit broken without a gnome-based environment running.As you are very accustomed to Mate, you could try setting it up in antiX to see if it runs better here than in Mint (was it Linux Mint or one of the Ubuntus that started to slow down for you? I cannot remember right now).
I remember there was a discussion some time ago about making a Mate flavor for antiX, and I remember building it from antiX core and trying it out (maybe even with runit, but I am not sure anymore) and it ran decently. Then I went around the net exploring how to make it more efficient, and that brought me to a lot of negative discussions that affected how I viewed the Mate Desktop (and I wrote very stupid remarks related to it here on the forum).
Anyway, returning to today, I just tried Mate inside a Virtual Machine (from antiX 19.3 live, not installed):

If you ever want to try, I would start on a VM first (or even on a Live USB with persistence) to see how it goes.antiX Live system enthusiast.

Thank you for your advice. I installed rclone and it works fine. I liked the ease of use and aesthetics in Mate, but speed became a usability issue. antix does not look great, but I have installed it on two laptops now and I am just trying to get some of the features I was used to. I will post a new question on finding a LAN drive.

::Programs tend to accumulate “feature bloat” over time as features and more features get added. As a result they get resource hungry and slower, and geometrically more complex to setup and operate.
It’s not that you can’t add many things, but eventually you end up with an Elephant, even more difficult to control than the one you were avoiding. You do realize that YOU will need to support it, because you will have a totally custom system? That isn’t necessarily bad, BTW, but it’s a much more time and effort intensive path than just running system X which meets most of your needs pretty well, but isn’t fast enough.
In my past work world, I used to tell people to find systems that met 95% of their needs right out of the box, or it’s not a “good fit”. I had seen people buy ones that only met 80% of their needs, and would watch them spend years trying to fill in the gaps. Even at 95% only some of the other 5% can be accomplished, The rest takes forever.
Not that many, many things can’t be added on to antiX. I’m a poster child for such an abomination. But computer based suffering is fun for me, LOL. Just saying, it might be cheaper to boost the speed of the machine to run the slower system that fits the needs better than to try to replace all the pieces inside.

I encountered exactly same issue recently, using the default browser Firefox ESR (78.4.0, FWIW) shipped in antiX 19.3. And, because the file I tried to download happened to be an image file (.jpg etc), I managed to find a workaround WITHOUT needing to install or modify any software. By no means it would be a decent solution, but perhaps funny enough to share. 🙂
1. Just double-click your image so that it will be shown in Google Drive’s web interface.
2. Click the Print button at upper right corner. Now, your raw picture will be shown in the web page, with a confirm-to-print window pops up.
3. Click “Cancel” to dismiss the confirm-to-print pop-up, and then IMMEDIATELY (like, within a couple seconds) right-click your mouse at your raw picture so that a context-menu will pop up. Your RAW picture on the web page will be gone within seconds, but that context-menu will remain.
4. In that context-menu, choose “Save image as …”, and, Voilà! Now you have your picture downloaded. 🙂Such method won’t work for .pdf files, but you might as well actually go ahead and print it into a local pdf file. If your file is a .docx, you can first open it in Google Docs and then its download feature work as expected. Haven’t tested more other file types. YMMV.

::I’m running 19.3 full x64 with Firefox up to date 78.6.1esr (64-bit). I was able to use Firefox to access my Google drive and download files etc. I don’t use it much, but I did download a file and had no problem. It shows up in the downloads list.
I installed PPC’s access_cloud-antix-version.sh script, made it executable, and ran it It configured my Google drive.
I ran it again and double clicked the Google Drive line. It opened SpaceFM (the file manager I have selected via Preferred applications) with an additional mount for my Google drive. I clicked it and all my Google drive files appeared in the SpaceFM pane, and there was nothing unusual that I could see. Interestingly, they were all files I had saved on my phone. So that means I’ve now found a more convenient way to get files off my phone. Thanks PPC.
Sorry, I really know nothing helpful about Gnome or Caja.
Anyway, I think I’ll add an icon for PPC’s script to my toolbar.
PS: Sorry I forgot to say I installed rclone and davfs2. At this point I’m not sure if I needed davfs2

::@BobC – you’r quite welcome!
You do not need davfs2 to mount cloud drives using rclone.
Side note: my script only dependency is yad, since it automatically offers to install rclone if it is not installed.
I’m in the process of creating a .deb file that includes a .desktop file (I have it’s .desktop file in my SpaceFM panel, so it has now inbuit cloud drive capabilities!)
For now, I created a .deb with the portuguese version of the scriptJanuary 24, 2021 at 2:10 pm #50627MemberPPC
::I just finished with the .deb files for the “antiX-cloud” script. They are hosted on the links listed below for at least 100 days.
Download it, right click it, install it. and it’s instantly available (if needed, update your menu so antiX-cloud shows up there)International version of the script (in english) is available here:
