Howto play sound w/Firefox Quantum & ALSA W/O Pulseaudio:

After several months and much googling, I finally found a way to get modern Firefox to play sound using just ALSA WITHOUT Pulseaudio (I hate Pulseaudio and refuse to install it)!:

Steps to enable modern Firefox (Quantum) to play sound WITHOUT PulseAudio
and WITHOUT recompiling from source (Known to work w/latest v58.0.2 on Antix):

1) apt-get install apulse

2) apt-get install patchelf

3) In Firefox: about:config
change: security.sandbox.content.level from “3” to “2”
change: security.sandbox.content.syscall_whitelist from “” to “16” (if 64bit)
or to “54” (if x86/32bit)!
change: security.sandbox.content.write_path_whitelist from “” to “/dev/snd/,/etc/asound.conf”
If using a local .asoundrc file: to “/dev/snd/,/etc/asound.conf”,
If not using an asoundrc file: to “/dev/snd/”.

4) (MUST ALSO BE REPEATED AFTER EACH FIREFOX UPDATE!!!):
patchelf –set-rpath /usr/lib/apulse libxul.so

5) RUN FIREFOX FROM A SCRIPT THAT ADDS “/usr/bin/apulse “:
/usr/bin/apulse /usr/bin/firefox.real &
