My old Samsung ML-1710P laser printer has always been easily recognized by all the distros I’ve used over the years.
MX-Linux also recognized it without encountering difficulties.

With Antix I turned on the printer and started the printer setup program (Control Center -> Hardware -> Setup printer).
The print settings window appeared with the message:

“Print service not available. Start the service on this computer or connect to another server.”

The first button “start service” was disabled; the second one “connect” was active.

Can someone help me?

Thanks. 🙂

Did you try
sudo service cups start

Are you running live or installed? This is the first thing you need to say.
The second thing is tell us what version of antiX are you running and the init you are using.

My guess is that you have used the MX Linux forums in the past and they always ask for the !Quick system Info”. Here, you can start with the output of
inxi -Fxz

Why is this important? Because the live USB version comes with boot options active to disable many services to speed the system. One of them is cups. Also, different antiX versions come with more things installed by default (for example, antiX Base doesn’t include cups (depending n the version). The other is because different inits have different ways to enable services.

Edit: As caprea has mentioned, assuming you are running antiX 19.X Full with sysvinit, to enable cups temporarily, you can run
sudo service cups start

Hi belf, for this somewhat older but good printer I needed to get and add a ppd from open printing org
to have everything working correctly.

To add the PPD you will need to ensure cups is running then using your browser of choice go to localhost:631
which is where the cups controll is adressed.
It is pretty easy to add the ppd in manage printers, need more help pls look over at openprinting then ask ask.
Not just on antiX.

Thanks to caprea, Xecure and ModdIt.

I tried with
sudo service cups start
and the printer setup program (Control Center -> Hardware -> Setup printer) immediately recognized the printer and installed the drivers.
I ran the test print and it worked correctly.

You are right: in my first post I was inaccurate.
I am currently using antiX 19.3 x64 full Live with persistence, waiting to install a new hard drive on the PC to replace the one that failed.

Thanks ModdIt for your suggestions.
I was able to print a test page simply by starting the CUPS service.
Do you think i might have any advantage installing a PPD?
I’ve never done this before.

The web page you indicated contains lines of code: how can I download it? Is it enough to copy and paste it into a text file?
It doesn’t seem like the correct procedure, because the instructions say:

To save this file on your disk, wait until the download has completed
(the animation of the browser logo must stop) and then use the
“Save as…” command in the “File” menu of your browser or in the
pop-up manu when you click on this document with the right mouse button.
DO NOT cut and paste this file into an editor with your mouse. This can
introduce additional line breaks which lead to unexpected results.

Thanks for any suggestion.

hi belf, I just copied in to leafpad and saved as indicated in the file.
#You may save this file as ‘Samsung-ML-1710-gdi.ppd
The instructions are a bit contradictory.

If printing is fine for you no need for addition, I had very slow print
(took ages to print multi pages) until the correct PPD was setup.

Thanks ModdIt.
I think printing is fine for me, even without the PPD by openprinting.org

But I’d like to learn the procedure for adding a PPD.
If it’s not too complicated to explain, please could you please tell me how?
Or link me a guide?

Thanks for your help.
Also thanks to the forum, I really like antiX and it will be my main distro when I’ll get the new hdd.

Hi belf, please take a look in localhost:631 then manage printers.
I is easy, I never looked for a howto.
I am rather busy for next few days so a fuller answer will have to wait.

Hi belf, found a few minutes to give an answer,

First ensure cups is running then go to localhost:631

In Cups for Administrators http://localhost:631/admin
You need Administration Modify Printer tab

at the bottom of page you can use
You can select your printer if shown or go to the entry

Or Provide a PPD File:

Browse to your PPD and add it.

Setup printer defaults and enjoy.

Thanks ModdIt.

Your help was very useful: I easily reached the “modify printer” page where I can provide a PPD file.
When necessary, I will be able to do it.

Thanks 🙂
