App select work poorly on my device, it takes 5 seconds to load, and the setting and columns buttons don’t work.
I looking something like Ulauncher that will work on AtniX.

the fastest choice would probably be rofi- that can be used as app-launcher and starts intantly even in old devices.

You can install it from synaptic, or via the terminal:

        antiX menu > Terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install rofi

You can test rofi, in the terminal running this command, that launches the GUI:

        rofi -show drun -show-icons

and I ran Ulauncher on antiX before. If you have a slow machine, stick with rofi, it’s the fastes and lightest launcher I found.

If you want to replace app-select with rofi, in the menu try this (if you are using the default destkop- icewm):

antiX menu > Control Panel > Icewm… > “Menu” tab
and replace the first line (that referes to App-select) with something like this:

prog "App searcher" /usr/share/icons/papirus-antix/48x48/apps/gnome-searchtool.png rofi -show drun -show-icons

Note: you can theme rofi, this is only the default setting… You can use one, more modern one, with this command:

        rofi -show drun -show-icons -drun-display-format: name,generic,exec,categories,comment -theme /usr/share/rofi/themes/arthur.rasi

(if you like it, you can use this command, on the menu, instead of “rofi -show drun -show-icons”

You could download it, install it, and replace app-select (assigned to ctrl+space) or add it to your toolbar
          ..
          https://ulauncher.io/#Download

          1. Download the .deb file
          2. Open a terminal and install the .deb file you downloaded

          cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ulauncher<press Tab key and it will autofill the rest of the filename>

          3. Main menu >> Control Centre >> Desktop tab >> Edit IceWM Settings >> Keys tab >> replace app-select with ulauncher >> save file >> Main menu >> Logout menu >> pullout menu >> restart IceWM
          4. Main Menu >> Applications >> antiX >> IceWM Toolbar Icon Manager >> Add Icon >> page down to ulauncher >> press enter to add it >> Quit

PS: This machine is a pretty fast I7 and it runs fast on it, but it runs everything fast. PPC seems to have already tried ulauncher
PSS: When idling on the system tray it is using 55 mb of memory all the time

If you loaded app-select when you log on and leave it running like ulauncher does, it would only use 34 mb of memory (21 mb less than ulauncher) and would also be fast. If you want it running in the tray like ulauncher you can run it in Desktop mode and it only uses 30 mb, again very fast because it stays loaded.

As for Display Columns, you need to left click on the display columns button to activate it. The settings button didn’t do anything on mine, either.

Rofi was ok, but I’m not a big fan.

With ulauncher I did like that it had the ability to remember the last xxx programs used for you, but given the 55 mm memory required, I’d rather use my toolbar for 0 mb of memory.

rofi does that too, and displays the last run applications on the top of the list (but ordered alphabetically)

The second rofi command I listed looks great, with transparencies, but lacks a slidebar (that works in a bit strangely on rofi). There are configurations that make rofi look like Gnome app launcher or kde’s. MXFB (Mx Fluxbox) seems to be considering using rofi as their applauncher/menu replacement…

Even jgmenu can be installed and used to search for apps, and launch them (even in it’s default setting, not my ft10 configuration). App launchers are a dime a dozen, you can install what you want, they will probably all run in antiX. But most stay resident in RAM – not good for computers low on resources. Rofi does not stay on ram- you launch, it does it’s thing and goes away until you need it. Jgmenu can be configured to stay or not stay resident in RAM (but you have to edit it’s config file, for that).

                How about xfce4-appfinder?

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

@PCC rofi works great, fast and simple.
Do you know how how to increase the icons size? And why does is say “durn” and not search?

@BobC I have an old machine, so maybe I will try rofi first before I try Ulauncher.

How do you install jgmenu on antiX? Seems to only be available in the sid/testing debian repos.

It’s in the antiX bullseye repo too.

Do you know how how to increase the icons size? And why does is say “durn” and not search?

What rofi displays is both a combination of the command line options and the .rasi config file we point it to. I do not know how to edit those config files. But there are lots of them (many available on-line).

For bigger icons, try this command:

                          rofi -show drun -show-icons -drun-display-format: name,generic,exec,categories,comment -theme /usr/share/rofi/themes/iggy.rasi

(this configuration also has a tab that allows you to use rofi as a task switcher).

Rofi usually says “drun” in the “app selection mode” because I think it stands for “.desktop run” – all the menu entries (with icons and descriptions, and category) that Linux apps have are stored inside their respective .desktop file.
There are some .rasi files that don’t show the “drun” text…

                          P.

I know this was off topic and hope this will end with this message.
I use search engines of course, but not the main stream ones (google, duckduckgo) and I did not search for “ghost rider” (english is not my main language) hence I was unable to find it. Like I wrote, “I have searched for it but unable to find it using common keywords.”
I tried with “dark fire skull wallpaper” but did not appear in the first couple of pages, “ghost rider” made the difference and I have found it.
Thank you PPC for your answer.
                              Sorry again, I apology.

Partly off-topic (but related to rofi)

Marcelocripe reminded me that I used rofi not only as an app launcher but also as a fast file searcher (it can be used as an interface for many commands, including “locate”)

                                xdg-open "$(locate home media | rofi -theme /usr/share/rofi/themes/fancy.rasi -threads 0 -width 50 -dmenu -i -p "Pesquisar")"

I did not create this script from scratch, but adapted it from some on-line example.

                                How to use this command:
-type the part of the name you want to search, and the window will display it. click the file you want to open, and it should open on the default file launcher (ex: documents open in LibreOffice, etc)
                                – you can search without using “*” example, if you search “antiX .txt”, rofi will locate all files that have “antix” and also “.txt” anywhere on the file name. This search is case insensitive (it will display results with “antix”, “antiX”, “Antix”, “ANTIX” on their name, etc).

All this info should be on some of my very old posts…

                                P.

We have your two .desktop files that PPC created at archive.org, one for searching apps and the other for searching files.
Please add your language translation in the two .desktop files, create a Name[] line and between the square brackets you add your language identifier or your language identifier + the country. For example, Name[fr] for the French language or Name[fr_BE] for the Belgian French language. The same rule applies to other entries in .desktop files.
Please send me your translated files or the texts so I can add them to the .desktop files.

                                  – – – – –
