::Tip to force mpv to open YouTube videos on a chosen quality (by default 480p): https://github.com/Samillion/mpv-ytdlautoformat
How to:
1- create, in your user’s home folder a file called ytdlautoformat.lua
2- open that file with geany
3-copy the text inside this web page to that file file: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Samillion/mpv-ytdlautoformat/master/ytdlautoformat.lua and save the change
4- Copy that file to this sub folder inside your user’s home folder: /.config/mpv/scripts/ (the fastest way to open this folder is to copy ~/.config/mpv/scripts/ and paste it in zzzfm’s address field.Use mpv to open any YouTube link, and it should always open in 480p…
Example:
launch mpv from the menu and drag and drop any youtube video link to mpv’s window. After a few seconds it should begin playing, in the chosen quality (by default 480p).If you want to use any other default resolution, edit the value in line 30:
local changedQuality = 480that said, I think that, for most videos, on most screens, 480p is a nice compromise between video quality and speed of play/loading…

::@davidcaffe – I just retested the procedure I recomended to install the lua script that forces mpv to open youtube videos in 480p. IT works perfectly in my antiX 19.x, 64bits…
Please note that if the sub-folder “scripts” does not exist inside the ~/.config/mpv folder, you’ll have to create it.Also the example commands that I posted also work perfectly here in my computer, to open the Dolphin Oracle test video in 360 and 480p:
Quality – 360p:
mpv --ytdl-format="(best[height<=360]/bestvideo+bestaudio)" https://youtu.be/mUicofUy3BkQuality – 480p:
mpv --ytdl-format="(bestvideo[height<=?480]+bestaudio)" https://youtu.be/mUicofUy3BkNote: if you correctly installed the lua script – using any of this commands always results in displaying video in 480p. (because you are forcing mpv to always use that resolution)

March 23, 2022 at 4:01 pm #79638MemberPPC
::@davidecaffe – I only tested the mpv command line options with youtube videos (as far as I know, they are meant to apply only to youtube videos). Note that, if you do manage to get the lua plug-in working, it seems to apply to Twitch videos too, but not Rumble… (this means that, unless you find a way to change the resolution of Rumble videos, they are played in full HD video- that your computer can’t handle very well)
From what I can see in screenshot-5 – you don’t have any hardware problem, just a warning that a full HD video, playing at 50 frames per second is too much for your hardware to handle…
It seems that, at least you can play youtube videos (either using mpv directly or the GUI smtube), that’s not bad for an old device… I can say that I never heard of rumble.com before reading your postEdit: I just tested some rumble videos on my single core desktop – they played fine in firefox (one video used “Auto” quality setting, another allowed me to choose “360p”.
Advice- try out other light browsers (seamonkey, palemoon, etc.) and see if videos play better on them…
You can search on-line is someone took the trouble to create a script to configure mpv default settings, when playing rumble videos, I can’t help you out on that particular problem.
Edit 2: I forgot to suggest this- try opening smtube and then, at it’s address bar, enter rumble.com and navigate it from inside smtube’s browser window (but videos are opened inside that window, not launched in an external media player window)- the on-line translator that I use was not very clear on the subject, but I think you said already that opening rumble on smtube helps a bit…P.
