Wonderful! This would be great stuff to see in our future software – provided this release turns out to be reliable and not full of unresolved defects.

Here’s to hoping that’s true! (I also hope to *try* this out in the very near future!)

Thanks, sybok. Until I read the the page you linked, I did not know that icewmbg can apply a different wallpaper to each workspace.

I’ll have to dig into this a bit; I did try to build a couple of times, based on a quick read of the documentation.

Apparently I have not read everything, because it’s not quite as simple as one of the documents suggest; that is, a ./configure; make; make install DOES NOT by default build the software; that’s a classic way to do it but apparently there is more to it than that; I’ll read in detail later and see if I can figure out what’s missing; probably system and architecture specific setup BEFORE running that sequence of commands.

If anyone beats me to it I’m more than happy to learn for your experience.

No need to compile. It will hit the antiX-21 (bullseye) repos very soon (sid and buster users should already have it in the antiX repos)

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

                    Be fair:
Ice is not full of defects, certainly has never been that way since moddits started using antiX, more than 3 years ago,
It is lightweight stable and extremely customizable including some task automation. Carrying over settings to another
setup just a case of copying over a config or some text files which has always just worked as long as file ownership is
                    corrected when neccesary.

++++ Certainly the best wm or desktop I have ever used over many years with linux. And better than what redmond ever
offered in terms of stability and usability.

Isuues we had and attributed by some to the wm were due to Libreoffice plus open Java. Installing Oracle or Amazon
java killed that rumour. Second was chrome based browser cache filling home above a sane level, even to the point
users were unable to login. The wm does not manage application memory..

Fixed that and have since then had rock solid ICEWM.

                    Regarding build
ICEWM and the homepage include build instructions, modern GNU system, automake and autoconfig toolchain is needed.
anticapitalista was so quick with updates I did not build this version. It has been smooth and fast to do so in
the past. Never really needed to build myself, more for learning experience.

BTW. I do not knock the other desktops included with antiX, just have a very firm preference.

@ anticapitalista, thanks for the fast ice update, your work is highly appreciated,
will check out the newly included changes/features over next days.

BTW. my present sid antiX setup with NVME and SSD is ridiculously fast on a more than 12
year old machine. Windoze on a modern high end i7 machine belonging to my daughter is
                      sluggish in comparison.

Her university forces windoze usage, wish EU would legislate against that kind of crap.

So I updated to 3.0 and tried the tabbed windows, but they don’t really work.

                        1. I drag with middle mouse button and shift one window on the other, until their title bards flicker, then I release.
                        2. The window I dragged on is gone now, but there is still only one titlebar, no tabs
                        3. Using Alt-Tab will allow me to get to the now hidden window, although once you hit that one in with repeated Alt-Tab, it somehow breaks Alt-Tab behaviour and you have to double Alt-Tab to get away from that window again.

A bit unfortunate, as I was looking forward to that feature.

I don’t have a middle mouse button. Most laptops don’t have 3 buttons on their trackpads. Maybe there is a workaround.

                          I put in a request.
                          https://github.com/ice-wm/icewm/issues/95

                          TABBED WINDOWS

A window frame may contain multiple client windows. To realize this, drag the title bar with the middle mouse button, while holding down a shift key, onto the title bar of another frame. The two title bars will start to flash to indicate that they can merge. Release the mouse button to merge the client of the upper window to the lower frame. Now the lower frame will have multiple clients, called tabs. Use the KeyWinNext=Alt+F6 and KeySysWinPrev=Alt+Shift+Esc keys to select a tab, or use the QuickSwitch or use a submenu in the window menu.

I didn’t know about the feature, it’s an interesting one but probably not something that I need or would frequently use. I do nevertheless enjoy IceWM; it’s a window manager that I discovered over 20 years ago and I’ve enjoyed it ever since, often avoiding full desktop environments to enjoy the speed and simple efficiency it provides (even if the feature described above doesn’t work perfectly); I have done without it and many other fancy features for decades.

Frankly I could get by with a text based environment, but I do appreciate a simple graphical environment like the one that IceWM provides.

I don’t know how much I need it, either.

Firefox and Brave already have tabs.
RoxTerm already has tabs if I want to work it that way. I don’t, I usually open separate RoxTerm windows, 4 at the moment.
zzzfm already has 4 panes of tabs.
                              Geany already has tabs.

But it bothers me that I can’t have them, if everyone else can, LOL 🙂

Well, as described above, they are not working, so the others also cannot have them 🙂

The IceWM developers are great, IMO. They are looking into it. Give them a chance to look at it and work on it.
