Nice write-up!

There is also wingrid-* which works with all window managers found in antiX. As a bonus, it will even resize windows that are in fullscreen (not possible with the new tiling options in icewm).

You are right, there is also wingrid-* but I have a very important note to make.

I work with 2 screens!

wingrid-* does not work or confuses my 2 screens. I simply cannot work with wingrid-*!

With keywin-*, all 4 functions on screen 1 work.
With keywin-*, I have 3 functions on screen 2 that work. If I press logo key + right arrow, my application returns to screen 1.

Someone should do the test with 3 screens. I’m not sure if wingrid-* and keywin-* work properly.

Dear Wallon – thanks for the tutorial – I already set this up in my work ocmputer (I have lousy memory and tend to forget the keybindings and have to try several combinations…)

If I may, there’s a typo in your english tutorial (I haven’t read the french version- since my highschool french is terrible):

you say:
You have to create a file in [~/home/user_name/.icewm/prefoverride] and put in the 4 commands below;

If should be something like:

In case it doesn’t already exist, you have to create the prefoverride file in ~/.icewm/ and make sure it has this 4 lines;
KeyWinTileLeft=”Super+Left”
KeyWinTileRight=”Super+Right”
KeyWinTileTop=”Super+Up”
KeyWinTileBottom=”Super+Down”

Tip: after saving the file, restart Icewm/ your session/ your computer, for the changes to take effect!

I fixed your sentence: there where several problems with it:
– “~/” is the same as “/home/[user_name]”, don’t use both, it wont work (the computer will try to access “/home/user_name/home/user_name/”
– the way the sentence is in English, you don’t explain that “prefeoverride” is the file name, not part of the path!
– the file may already exist, for some reason (ex: someone already created it, or it gets generated automatically in a future icewm version…

I hope you don’t mind the e small “corrections”. I also changed this post, so it includes all the steps you you mention (just for the sake of avaing the “full how-to” (minus the great pictures) here straight in the forum…

Edit2: I forgot to mention 2 things: the F11 key toggles on/off the full screen mode for the window that is in focus (great for people like me with a netbook with a tiny screen that sometimes cuts the bottom of the window) and also comment this: I though it was strange to use the “Super” key for this, then I thought how smart of a move it was: “Windows” key plus the arrow pointing to where the window should be… Man… you get a standing ovation! I won’t ever forget this shortcut keys!

Thank you for your compliments.

You can correct anything you want, English is not my first language and I don’t have much skill with Linux.

For the key combination (logo key + arrow), I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel. It’s the same key combination used in other environments like Windows, Gnome, Linux Mint or MX Linux. It is therefore more intuitive for people who have used another operating system.

Don’t forget the people who won’t know how to put Windows 11 on their computer. They will install antiX in French (it’s better) on their computer. It’s a joke…

I am not trying to discourage you from assigning keys that you like, but IceWM in antiX comes with these options that I can think of. I can’t tell you which of these work with two screens.

You might consider them if you find your 4 key choices a limiting factor…

1. Tile option on the Window menu via mouse or keyboard

2. WinArrange on Alt+Ctrl+KP_Left # Left-Move window Left keypad rose in preferences or prefoverride

3. # Wingrid on Ctrl+ 1 thru 0 on the number row in keys
key “Alt+Ctrl+1” wingrid-left.sh

4. # Wingrid on Ctrl+Shift KP rose
key “Ctrl+Shift+KP_Left” wingrid-left.sh # Left-Move window to Left in keys

5. KeyWinTileLeft=”” # assign your own winarrange tiling key in preferences or prefoverride

6. key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_4” icesh -f sizeto 49% 100% top left in keys file

Hello,

I’m sure that Wallon’s tip is a plus compared to the keyboard shortcuts visible under Menu/Settings/Preferences/Keywin.
In this menu, certain key combinations allow you to move the active window to different places on the console.
But I haven’t found any that reduce the active window by half a screen and move it up, down, left or right.
But, I may not have found the right sequence of keys.
Anyway, this tip is good.

However, be careful, on the keyboard I use (packard bell easy notemz35 : https://lebonclavier.fr/packard-bell-easynote/4192-Clavier-Packard-Bell-EasyNote-MZ35-Francais-Azerty.html), you have to press several keys other than logo + (right, left, up or down), but when you have found the right keys, it is effective.

a priori, l’astuce de Wallon apporte un plus par rapport aux raccourcis clavier visibles sous Menu/Réglages/Préférences/Keywin.
Dans ce menu, certaines combinaisons de touches permettent en effet de déplacer la fenêtre active en différents endroits de la console.
Mais je n’en ai pas trouvée qui réduise la fenêtre active d’un demi écran et la déplace en haut, en bas, à gauche ou à droite.
Mais, j’ai pu ne pas trouver la bonne séquence de touches.
En tout cas, cette astuce est bonne.

Cependant, attention, sur le clavier que j’utilise (portable packard bell easynote mz35 : https://lebonclavier.fr/packard-bell-easynote/4192-Clavier-Packard-Bell-EasyNote-MZ35-Francais-Azerty.html), il faut appuyer sur plusieurs touches autres que logo + (droite, gauche, haut ou bas), mais lorsqu’on a trouvé les bonnes touches, c’est efficace.
