      From https://github.com/ice-wm/icewm/releases/tag/3.3.0
      release announcement.
A new preference for ToolTipIcon has been added.

As user preferences are not overwritten during ICEWM updates
users who prefer no Tooltip Icons can now follow below to have
      a quieter toolbar.

      In /home/yourusername/.icewm/preferences
      Find
      # Delay in ms before tooltip window is displayed.
      # ToolTipDelay=500 # [0-5000]

Add new preference below that entry
If set to 0 no Icon Popup will be shown

      # Show an application icon in toolbar and tray tooltips.
      # ToolTipIcon=1 # 0/1

Please do take a read through the available preferences,
      there are many.

        Thanks for reminding people.

BTW – Latest update to desktop-default-icewm have the changes in the preferences file.
        It is located in /etc/skel/,icewm

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Much more thanks due to you for the work on the distro, BobC for the good idea
and ICEWM devs for adding the new controlling preference so quickly.

I think the popup tips are very useful for those with poorer eyesight, those
rich enough to have 4K screens, or both and for sure new users.

The master preference file is also in /usr/share/icewm/preferences
I presume a newly created user home would get the latest version.

I’m glad it all worked out Ok in the end. It was my fault for asking for the feature, but in my defense a had asked for it to a the preference setting so it could be optional when I asked for it.

I do like it turned on for my laptop, as my screen is Hi-Res and my eyesight is getting weaker, so its much easier for me to see with the large icons.

@BobC, please no apolgy asked for, or needed, the popup icon feature is very useful.
I like it. A new user needs time to figure out what each icon miniature means, using
the expansion feature means we keep the compact toolbar for efficiency while giving
              users a visual aid.

I read a post saying you and others were getting worried about changing things or even
              posting on the forum.

Which to me was recently a terribly agressive misinforming crappy place to even visit
              and read on.

Having read pretty much every post you have ever made all I can say to that is you are
among the best of the best on help, advice and innovation. I use a lot of the results
              daily.

              For that my sincere thanks.

@BobC – man, your work on the default window manager ( IceWM) is something I admire a lot – you push the WM devs to include new and useful features, you create themes, you create and update scripts that add useful additions (like the recent files menu) – regular computer users will miss Desktop Environments less and less, thanks to you!

The Devs at IceWM took over via fork a few years ago and have made a lot of improvements to the package without big increases its requirements quite a bit over the 7 years since I started using it.

And yes, optimal would be running with features as good or better than the DE’s, without needing the resources those systems draw. On the older machines, its a night and day difference.

I agree with both of you (PPC and BobC). I have been using IceWM myself for at least twenty years and it was good back then and it’s still good, even better; stable, efficient, usable; for me, no reason to use a desktop environment.

I’ll use Xfce on distributions that install it by default, but frankly I don’t need it; a simple GUI is enough for me.
I’m using an old, slow HP s5747c desktop today, and I wouldn’t dare run a DE on this any more; now that it’s up, it’s working OK, but it was very slow and frustrating to wait for the network manager to load and recognize the available Wifi networks! In fact, it repeatedly refused to work with Connman/cmst, and I was forced to switch to Ceni; even then, it took literally minutes to initialize sufficiently to identify the Wifi signals broadcasting, and it took another 30-40 additional seconds to secure the connection once it finally appeared.
