Hiyall,
Is there ANY way I can add a USB icon to the Desktop when I insert one?
Desktop folder doesn’t work for my brain.- This topic was modified 9 months, 1 week ago by Peter Linu.

::Peter Linu, you already opened at least two threads with the same question.
On the other hand you did not answer any of the questions you were asked by others trying to help you.
Please always stick to a single thread until your problem is solved and try to answer questions the best you can.
The diligent helpers here could otherwise lose the desire to deal with your issues, it would not be surprising.

::Hiyall,
Please see BobC’s latest enquiry entitled: ‘on Insert’.
THAT’S what I want.Live-USB = zzz-IceWM-antiX21-runit-64-base: static persistence

::Peter,
I saw that before in Puppy linux and remember how that worked, but it isn’t something I am capable of migrating to antiX.
anticapitalista wrote some instructions for how to do it in antiX back in 2007, but it was DIY. Puppy’s code to do it was beyond my comprehension.
Anyway, I like Spacefm/zzzfm better anyway, but I’m sorry, I wasn’t able to get the feature I was hoping to use working.
Maybe someone knows a way and will answer my other thread. But Caprea is right. Please don’t create more threads with the same question asked different ways.

::BobC,
I’m reading about Spacefm. It seems able to get me my desktop icon(s). Am I correct?Live-USB = zzz-IceWM-antiX21-runit-64-base: static persistence

::What I don’t understand is that there are two icons there by default. File and Help. How difficult could it be adding a USB icon?

::As a concession, maybe do this:
1. open rox-filer
2. navigate to / (root of file system).
3. drag the /media folder to the desktop and release.
4. now you should be able to access the USB drives quicker there, under “/media/demo” folder.
The /media folder is always there, but the “demo” subfolder gets dynamically added automatically when you insert a stick. And then the demo subfolder will get removed automatically when you remove all user-mounted devices. (That’s why I say to drag the “/media” folder, not the “/media/demo” folder.- This reply was modified 9 months, 1 week ago by christophe.

::Christophe, thanx for the work-around however BobC alerted me to zzzfm desktop. Icons can sit on the desktop and it alerts me to a USB being inserted. Added advantage of a file system closer to what I’m accustomed.
Final question; do I need to do anything to save zzzfm as the default desktop or will it remember each time I boot up?

::Yes, Peter, but if you read my posts completely, you would understand that the feature I planned to use to get the icon to appear on the desktop isn’t working as expected for zzzfm or spacefm.
If I do get it to work, maybe we’ll see if we can get the Dev’s to include the idea as an option for all to use easily if they want it.

::Final question; do I need to do anything to save zzzfm as the default desktop or will it remember each time I boot up?
I wrote to you:
I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzz-FM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Workspace, Other Workspaces and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.– – – – –
Final question; do I need to do anything to save zzzfm as the default desktop or will it remember each time I boot up?
August 1, 2022 at 6:53 pm #86776ModeratorBobC
::I think I found the bug, and I added a few printf lines to make it obvious what the values are, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to know how to configure and make the program. Also, C++ is not a language that I know.

::Hiyall,
BobC, thank you for your (different) persistence. I did read ALL of the other post but didn’t understand most of it. Yes, Desktop functionality is very important to me, being a 30 year Windoze veteran. Particularly now at my age where I can use desktop icons as my reminder pad. Also it’s the only place in the OS that allows me to be messy without repercussion!I look forward to this function being included in all of antiX. [Right clicking would be good as well.]
Christophe and Marcelo Cripe, thank you and obrigado.

::It was a bug, IMO. I’m not a C programmer, but think I found and fixed the bug. LOL, It definitely should be well tested given my lack of knowledge/experience in that language, let alone changing a program of that level of complexity.
But be careful what you ask for.
So, I got it to add the icon as a link from the desktop to the /media folder where the USB was mounted.
But when it gets removed or dismounted, the link stays there on the Desktop. Maybe that’s good, or maybe that’s not so good, LOL.
