One of the important people in German literary scene has gone forever. He died on 17. December this year at the age of 91. For the people of other countries (and also young people in Germany) not knowing him: Wagenbach-Verlag and Short summary on Wikipedia. He was the publisher of the literature magazines “Freibeuter”, “Kursbuch” etc. and published some very important modern German and also Italian authors, among them Erich Fried, Günter Grass, Ingeborg Bachmann, Hans Werner Richter, Kurt Biermann, Ernst Jandl, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, to mention only some of them. Notwithstanding his unbending and upright anti-Faschist left position he was a recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, and the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Most insightful is the way he organised his publishing house and the code of practice concerning his publishments, which sets a clear counterpoint to the profit oriented way of other publishing companies.
