I downloaded and tried 17.2 today, and was so impressed, I installed it to my hard drive for more serious evaluation. You have created a phenomenal distro which sets itself apart in smart, useful, functional ways. Great work!

Following are the hiccups that I encountered during the install. If the correct action is to report each individually as bugs, let me know how, or just make life easy for me and accept this feedback as-is.

Also, I plan on waiting for responses to this report and then re-installing the distro from scratch, so if you have any questions or requests, let me know.

      1) click on install desktop icon, and then select cancel. The response
is a window claiming that the install will run! One does then have
the option pressing cancel a second time.

      2) On running the installer, after selecting keyboard layout, gives message that is updating
initramfs, but does not afterwards proceed to next menu. Requires
user to press ok a second time.

      3) timezone? I don’t remember being prompted about setting a time zone.

      4) I don’t remember any prompt to set a default user account and password. This may have been the reason for problems I encountered later, mentioned below.

      5) The installer really should force the user to set a rooot password

      6) The installer gives no indication of completion after performing a grub install, just closes window

      7) I requested that grub be installed to the mbr (on hardware that does not support gpt/uefi). Upon initial boot from the hard disk,
grub failed and exited to the grub prompt.

7.1) My fix was to reboot to live media, run ‘boot repair’ option to fix grub
config. This did not give me an option for grub on /dev/sda, so I chose /dev/sda8, and subsequent booting did work.

      8) The antix root partition is named rootantix17.1 for version 17.2

      9) There is a typo in the ‘boot repair’ program: “is being rebuild” should be “is being rebuilt”

      10) I would love to have normal boot progress be displayed as on the live
      medium …

At this point, I have a basic antix install, but without a default user account besides ‘demo’.

      11) The system (possibly ‘slim’) issues a full-screen message ‘failed to execute login command’ prior to opening login
      screen.

      12) From login screen, it is unclear how to reboot / shutdown without performing a hard reset.

      13) The login manager defaults to user ‘demo’, but fails to login, issuing same message
      ‘failed to execute login command’

      14) Logging in as root (OUCH!), with the default password ‘root’, does succeed.

      15) /usr/sbin is not in $PATH for root

      16) Attempting to add a user account using the gui app did not work, but gave no indication of failure. Using the command line program did succeed.

      17) The installer should really delete the demo account … (and force selection of a real root password)

      18) ‘desktop > other desktops’ should have an option for the antix
      default.

      19) volume does not recognize my keyboard volume adjustment and mute
      keys

Finally, some feedback about your website, which had some quite unusual behavior, especially for a distro sufficiently security conscious to have an ad-block program installed by default…

      20) why is the forum requiring a javascript package that attempts to
      (repeatedly )perform canvas fingerprinting?

      21) why should the login registration need to retrieve data from translate.google.com

It sounds like you got a bad iso. Did you check the md5sum?

Maybe you meant an ‘old’ iso?. Anyway, that’s not the issue – The iso was downloaded less than 24 hours ago, and its md5sum matches that recorded now on the download page.

For me, it’s the torrent on the download page for antix 17.2 64-bit full. Of course, I can’t speak for what user @caprea used to replicate one / some / all the issues.

Also, @anticapitalista, from the way you have responded (twice now), it seems you think that I reported a single issue, but I didn’t. I reported about twenty issues, some clearly totally unrelated.

                      thanks for the feedback.

I ran the sourceforge supplied 64bit image several times last nite and did not encountered any of these issues.

however, from caprea’s output, it looks like some sort of broken connection and apparently the installer cannot write files back to the system. even the grub-install failed like that.

quick question…did both users use “auto install” ?

I’m interested, firstly, in making sure the installer worked correctly. The rest can wait.

I tested 64 bit full in VBox and the installer crashed after setting up grub so I ran it again and it completed and re-booted into installed OS without error.

actually, most of your issues are due to a failed install.

so for the most part, there is one issue…a problem with the installer. and one we haven’t been seen before. given this installer has been running on MX snapshots for weeks, its very unexpected.

For completeness, the usb-stick was already once remastered.
First installed in german, same result.
Then to get english treminal-output of minstall , for better reading, did an installation in en-US.

Edit: I have seen this crashing after grub-install you mentioned already one time on antix17.1, as you I ran the installer again and it completed.

But now half the installation procedure is missing and a repetition is no use at all, same happens.

@anticapitalista: No separate /home partition was specified to be created; the installer was directed to install antix in a partition prior used by another distro, so the partition would have been re-formatted. The install did specify en_US.

@dolphin_oracle: I don’t know what you mean by ‘auto install’. I used the installer, as launched by the desktop icon, and used its option to select to over-write a target partition on a hard drive with several other distros co-exisitng.BTW, I watched one of your videos – good job, well presented.

@anticapitalista and @dolphin_oracle: My original report listed about twenty issues, each numbered to make it easy for you to refer to a specific one by using its number in the list.

                                  1. Correct. What do you suggest?
                                  2. Not on my install. After adding GB keyboard, after initramfs is finished it moves to the first screen of the installer.
                                  3. It is best to set timezone at live boot menu. You get a second chance on screen 6
                                  4. Screen 7 does this.
                                  5. It does on screen 7
                                  6. It moves to next screen
                                  7. Not in my tests – it installed correctly to MBR
                                  8. Correct. You can change it though on screen 2 IIRC
                                  9. will fix
                                  10. What do you mean by ‘normal boot progress be dispayed’? It should be the same as running live

                                  Rest to come later

Please post the output of inxi -v8 so we can see the hardware you have.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
