I have an old PC (32-bit CPU, 512 MB RAM, 150 GB HDD) which can’t boot from USB, so installation needs to be from CD-ROM.

As antiX-19.3-base is bigger than what fits on a CD, I opted for antiX-19.3-core. Burned a CD and nstalled it successfully.

Now I want to upgrade my core installation to base (or later maybe even full).

Using cli-aptiX I already installed the xorg metapackage, but don’t know how to go further from here.

What do I need to do to get my core install upgraded to become a base install?

        Hi Robert B,

Honestly, I’m not sure you can do an upgrade from Core to Base. Maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject can shed some light on this. But I am experimenting with a similar project right now. My goal was not to upgrade to Base so my approach will probably not suit your needs. But here’s my thread:

        https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/trying-to-add-icewm-to-antix-19-3-core-stuck/

If you have a working USB port I would suggest you try installing Base or Full using Plop Boot Manager. Plop has worked for me several times when I have a machine that does not support booting from USB. Put the Plop CD in the CD-ROM player and put the antiX Base Live USB in the USB port. Boot to Plop from CD and then direct Plop to boot from the USB port. You might have to play with the Plop Boot Manager setup to set the USB port to Mode 1.

        Give it a try.

You can also do as others recommended (I think caprea). And have antiX base on USB connected, butt antix core CD and use the
          from=usb
          boot parameter

@Xecure, that is interesting. I had not considered using Core on the CD and Base on the USB. I knew about the from=usb boot code but I assumed I had to have the same iso in both the CD and the USB. Since I knew that the 19.3 Base iso would not fit the CD I was suggesting using Plop instead.

I have also been successful using two other techniques when I can’t boot from USB – swap out the CD-ROM player for a DVD-ROM player, or pull the hard drive and attach to another box that does have USB boot then put the HD back in the non-USB-booting machine.

I haven’t tried booting the iso from the hard disk. I have read that it is possible to boot from an iso directly from the hard disk without using either the CD or USB. But I don’t know if that can be done with antiX. Maybe someone else knows if this can be done?

I think it’s possible to use a base-cd and full-usb or core-cd and base-usb and so on with the from=usb trick, as long as the kernel and init is the same on both isos.

As antiX-19.3-base is bigger than what fits on a CD

This is not true as far as I know, it says it’s 752mb big , but the iso fits for burning on a cd. Try it .

EDIT:Sorry, I have to take that back.
antiX 19.2.1-base was the last edition that fit on a cd. You and seakon64 are absolutely right.

It is definitely possible to boot an ISO image from a variety of sources.

I’ve personally booted and installed systems from boot floppy disk and CD (early Slackware), CD, DVD, hard drives and most recently USB.

I don’t remember offhand the technique and specific details of booting from a hard drive location but between 2005-2010 I used the technique several times.

Search for the details. If you have trouble finding it let me know and I’ll dig it up and share the details with you,

Thanks all, for the many good suggestions! I eventually did what Xecure suggested:

                  1. wrote the image I wanted to a USB stick (I decided for antiX-full after all)
                  2. booted antiX-core from CD-ROM
                  3. at the antiX boot prompt, added: from=usb
                  4. started up antiX-full from the USB
                  5. did a fresh install of antiX-full to HDD (overwriting the antiX-core that I had there before)

All is good now. Thanks again!

That’s great. Thanks for updating us. I will remember the Core-CD/Base from=usb trick. I had done the from=usb with my install of antiX-19 Base on one of my P-III’S. But I didn’t think it would work with two different versions. I guess I should of tried it.

Of course this works if you have a working USB port. If you don’t have a working USB port these other tricks will need to be used.

@caprea, can we still download antiX-19.2 or 19.1? I could not find those earlier version on the download sites. If 19.2 or 19.1 fits on a CD then one could install from that and do an update/full-upgrade routine to get to 19.3.

Except for antix 19.0, you can download the older version (at least at the moment of writing this) from here:

Thanks xecure, I looked for those but somehow missed that “old” folder. It looks like both 19.1-Base and 19.2-Base are 733MB. So they won’t fit on CD either.

Yes, it’s possible to start with an “older” version in the 19 series, update packages and end up with current packages. The Version identifier will remain whatever it was in the installed version; the software, however, will be whatever is updated.
