Too bad that you can’t upgrade from 19 to 21, but 19 is still a great version and should still be supported by antiX with security fixes for years. I should make a new sub-700mb respin of antiX 21 base, those were pretty useful last year with antiX 19. I got a bit carried away this year with theming and icons and making the antiX 21 respins look and feel different.

I used antiX 19.5 the other day on one of my older computers. It’s a nicely maintained system and it enabled my older system to work fine. On systems that DO support newer kernels and newer software components, I definitely enjoy antiX 21, especially in runit form. That combination really works well on the systems that are capable of handling it.

I’m grateful that we’re able to support both versions at the present time; on two different systems, the older system gracefully operates with 19.5, whereas the other systems work well with antiX 21; nice to have BOTH versions available.

Just tried the net iso CD and same result, only “press F1 for help” was displayed. I dont know what is stopping this laptop from going past that and freezing. Is there a way to edit the iso to just skip that screen and go right into the default load? My screen res is 1024×768 dont know if that’s the problem. I never edited an iso before idk if it is even possible.
Meanwhile I’ll look for some other grub installers if there are any.
Btw, I also created a grub.iso from the antix usb and burned it to a CD. It recognised windows xp and 7 when doing the ls (hdx, msdosx) but the ext4 antix partition is “unknown”

Are you absolutely sure the BIOS boot setting is correct,
you should be able to get in to the BIOS with either F2 or F12.
Switch on and keep tapping the key until you get the BIOS screen.

I am not fasmiliar with your actual device but the press F1 for help
message is often indicating no bootable/boot device found.

I got into the bios, only boot options are Lan, Hd, cd and floppy. I use a plop boot manager cd to boot from usb. There is really not much else: (I’ll try to upload an image)
If the image didnt work, in the startup configuration this shows up:
-Boot display set to Both instead of Auto
              -Screen expansion Enabled
              -Resume Lan/Modem access Enabled
              -Hotkey beep Enabled
              -Fast boot Enabled

-Boot secuence (Hd, cd, floopy, lan)
-Speedstep technology set to maximum performance

First thing I would try is to disable fast boot. Also the cd should be first boot option.
                What is this, Boot-Display:Both ?

Edit: How comes uploading pictures suddenly workes ?

I know right, it just worked now for some reason. I’ll try sending the frozen screen with the f1 for help text and see if that gets uploaded. Also I’ll try to disable fast boot and switch cd boot to first place and lets see if thats works.

Edit: How comes uploading pictures suddenly workes ?

Probably for the same reason it (the forum software) thinks a post or a pm with just text is “Dangerous”…

@Irina – hum… If you are trying to boot from the plop cd in order to then boot from the usb device, your boot order does have to have “CD-ROM” first.
Like previously said – if the boot order is Hard drive first and it detects a Hard Drive but with a problem on the Operating System, your boot probably just stops, instead of trying the second option.
Usually I have my computers set up to boot from usb/cd-rom first – so if far in the future I have to reinstall the system (ex: if I happended to mess it up and reinstalling is faster than trying to fix it), I don’t have to remember to change the boot order…

Also, thinking about the error you got when you tried to run minstall – the installer probably was looking for it’s config file, that probably does not exist in an installed system- I’m not sure if you can copy the correct file/folder from a live cd and then use it…

                    P.

I was pressing f12 to select cd as boot option. I now have it switched to first place, and disabled fast boot. But same result (I’ll try to send it again)
Trying to copy the live cd files sounds interesting, I’ll look into that now 🙂

@Irina – did you ever try to user made antiX isos I recommended initially?
The screen your are getting clearly shows that the computer detects the live media and tries to boot from it, but, for some reason, it only draws the background image and nothing more- it looks like incompatibility between antiX live boot system and your hardware…

I did try “remaster_antiX-21_sysvinit_386_full_kernel_4.4.0-296_01-16-2022.iso” as you suggested but got same result. I will try again with fast boot disabled.
Also, when I used the usb antix instalation I made. I looked for my laptop specs:

Im copying the cd live installer files over to the usb antix install I made (it is still copying files atm).
I will try this first: Mount the live-usb. Rename the file /boot/syslinux/gfx-cpio to /boot/syslinux/gfx-cpio.xxx.
As @caprea suggested, which is the solution in the 2016 post. I dont know if I should include the last dot of gfx-cpio.xxx. <That last dot, not sure if it is required or if it is just good spelling.
I’ll try those two methods and come back asap. (Which may take hours which I hope not). If either one works I’ll gladly announce it 🙂

I just tried to rename the /boot/syslinux/gfx-cpio to /boot/syslinux/gfx-cpio.xxx on an antiX21-live stick and it didn’t change anything
here during boot. Might these things have changed since antiX16.

I havent tried that just yet as it is still copying files. But that sucks… could it be that it looks the same but it is different in someway?
Also I want to stop for a moment and thank everyone for all the help up until this point. Thank you for taking some time to help me 🙂
