antiX-17 ships with eudev as opposed to udev. This *is* eudev, but the way it has been configured relies on tricking udev. As a result, it appears as udev in the repos and as udev in /etc/init.d rather than as eudev.
Since the release of antiX-17 and thanks to the work on eudev by the devuan experimental team we now have a better, fully ‘independent’ eudev in the default repos.

      Want to install it?

First of all, make sure your antiX-17 is fully up to date.

      apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

      Now install eudev.

      apt-get install eudev

      Get rid of udev

      apt-get purge udev libudev1 libudev-dev

To avoid an error message on next boot, remove this file

      /lib/udev/rules.d/92-console-font.rules

Then, just to be sure, rebuild the initramfs (this may not be needed, but no harm done if used)

      update-initramfs -k all -u -t

Finally, you can remove the folder /etc/init (NOT /etc/init.d!!) if you want.

      Reboot.

      What are the benefits?

      1. On my laptop (Thinkpad L412) boot time is a bit faster and RAM usage a bit less.
      2. It *seems* that network connects faster
      3. You are now using ‘pure’ eudev.

Do not try any of the above if it seems ‘all Greek to me’ and you cannot fix any ‘possible’ issues that may arise.

Added: You can even do this running antiX live with persistence (root) on a usb device or as a frugal install on a hard drive.

I’ll install the real eudev when I get near a wifi connection.

I have a fresh snapshot of my install of antiX-17 with Xfce4-lite. It idles at 100 MB RAM used after boot on the early model AA1 (mod AOA150).
MX-16 runs fine, idling at 166 MB RAM used after boot.
Both have a few things removed [and added] from original.

After following your steps to replace udev with eudev, my install of antiX-17 with Xfce4-lite now idles at about 91 MB RAM used after boot, compared to the before value of 100 MB RAM used on an early model AA1 (mod AOA150).

Subjectively, it seems to boot a bit faster. No longer near an internet connection to offer an opinion on net speed.

            RAM usage is much lower.

              Thanks for the reports.
Please check that there are no regressions. I mean does mounting of internal/external devices work as before (or better) such as for usb sticks, phones, cameras and whatever you youngsters plug into your usb ports. How about printers and scanners? Audio devices such as external/internal speakers, microphone?
The more feedback we get, the better antiX will become.

new problem after I did udev stuff above on my 32 bit it no longer boots.
It sits at the grub loader and won’t boot….it still boots live cd but not
the updated. I’m running antix17-full-32bit with strech-stable repos.
anyone else have this problem or know how to fix hdd from live cd to
revert back to old udev stuff.
