If you are not dependent on the latest version of telegram-desktop, you could also enable the debian-backports Repo.
      It’s version 1.1.23-1~bpo9+1
You have to edit as root the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list
Put the following lines there in

      # Debian Backports
      deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ stretch-backports main

      Afterwards
      apt-get update

You can now install telegram-desktop with synaptic or apt-get install

But don’t forget to disable the debian-backborts after you installed it.

      # Debian Backports
      # deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ stretch-backports main

there is also the flatpaks. and flatpaks don’t typically require systemd, although I’ve found a few that have issues (discord) without it.

I still can’t understand why the thread starter doesn’t take the easiest way and “install” the tarball from the homepage???

I mean, the Telegram app is THE example of almost perfect programing.

Download, open the package, double click and it’ll pop up.

It takes care of auto update, of adding shortcuts, of …

It’s designed in the best malware manner.

It doesn’t ask you for your OS, it doesn’t need or ask for permissions … it just does what it’s supposed to do.

If I would try to imagine a perfect OS, some MacLinDows, it would come bare bone: Taskbar with clock, networking, battery indicator, file manager, terminal and web browser.

All of the apps would be Telegram-like: download, unpack in some folder and double click and you are up and running.

That way, we’d really get a universal “OS for the Human Beings”.

Great, don’t forget to disable the debian-backports with the same sudo leafpad command from above.

Yep but, there’s a better way and the worse one. πŸ˜‰

Now he’ll have to wait (hope) on updated .deb instead of having the update in a moment when it rolls out.

But why not complicated if it could have been the easy way. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
