A little sketch of the situation:
I have a HP-deskjet-5550, directly connected through USB, which has served me well for many years. It was installed essentially automatically under Antix21. There’s also an Officejet Pro 6970, a network printer located in another room. It has two-sided printing capabilities, which is why I can occasionally make good use of it. If my memory serves me well, it was easily detected on the network and installed under Antix17. With Antix21 it presents a lot of problems.
When detecting the printer in the Print Settings app (found in AntixCC, or the menu Applications>Preferences) and following the installation procedure you get a ‘Internal Server error’ message, which isn’t particularly enlightening.
When installing it by hand by entering it’s URI socket://<IP>:9100 (copied from the Antix17 installation) you find that the correct .ppd driver file for this type of printer is not present in Antix21.
Next step was installing specific HP software from Synaptic. You need hplip and hplip-gui, but even then it gets tricky. In the attached image you see the most important dialog box. On the bottom right you see a field ‘Jetdirect port’. It has three allowed settings: 1, 2 and 3. Neither of them works, but you can delete the proposed setting and leave it blank, at which point the printer is detected, and the necessary settings are applied automatically.

::Thanks for the guide. I was lucky enough and my network printer HP Deskjet 2540 was immediately detected and installed. I tried both methods:
1) Print Settings App. [ Add -> Network Printer -> Find Network Printer (immediatly above this option I see the printer and select it) ]. I selected the HPLIP option and cntinued fordward with the options]
2) hp-setup -> Networ/Wireless… -> Show Advanced Options -> Manual Discovery -> Add IP addres (192.168.1.38 in my case) -> And continue forward
