Totally lost here. The only reference to printing I could find was from Control Centre>Package Installer>Printing>HP Printing extras.
Ran this but then nothing appeared in menu or submenus. There was an url to localhost port but this left me none the wiser and there was no list of printers anywhere to be found.
Help needed please.November 4, 2018 at 5:37 pm #13084Anonymous
::What brand and type of Printer are you trying to set up?
Did you look at a manufacturers support site if you can download a driver?
That‘s usually the simplest way.
Finding drivers can be troublesome though.
For my Canon, I can get the driver only on Canon Asia website.

::Unless I am misunderstanding, installing printers is in Control Center/Hardware/Setup Printer.
I installed my network printer this way. It actually detects most of network printers.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::You are not misunderstanding. “All ways lead to Rome” but, “the optimal way”…
You decided to take the long way, across the seas and over the mountains. If the manufacturer is providing the own drivers, it’ll be either “one click install” (.deb/.rpm) or,
it’s gonna be an install script and it’ll not ask you “strange stuff” like IP address and such.November 5, 2018 at 7:35 am #13105Memberolsztyn
::Thanks for additional insight. Understandably vendor provided drivers may define printer more precisely too.
I have also a question, to leverage your knowledge of the subject:
– Debian and Ubuntu should in principle have the same CUPS based procedure to detect and define network printers, right?
– For some reason, when I am installing network printer (HP color Laser 4550 in my case) through ControlCenter/Hardware it appears I see fewer options defining such printer then going through very similar process under Ubuntu based Mint. E.g. I see memory size range is up to 63 M while in very similar process under Ubuntu Mint allows more precise 64M+.
Would this be due to older version of utility on Debian or just that underlying utility is separate from Ubuntu and may not show some options?Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::CUPS owner is Apple but it has different drivers included then Debian and Ubuntu.
Basic utility can be older or newer version. Debian usually uses older versions.
CUPS is pulling the information from “somewhere” – Apple, Arch, Debian, Ubuntu,
Distribution … or your own sources (if you own repo) can add their own stuff.November 5, 2018 at 11:14 am #13130MemberBudgie
::Hi and thanks for the various replies.
I too thought installing printers is in Control Center/Hardware/Setup Printer. No it isn’t!
I have no idea why there is no provision for printer installation. Could it be that no printer is detected so no setup shown? I only use network printers so that could be the problem.
I have had to fall back to antix for this laptop because openSuSE is no longer supported for 32 bit machines but no way am I going to go back to searching for drivers all over the web. There must be provision within the package or another package somewhere, just not found it yet. Maybe will need to look for another 32 bit offering as I have little time to spare playing with this. I need to get work done!
If somebody has an answer please let me know.

Does
system-config-printerin terminal bring you there ?Maybe it is not installed, are you using base ?
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/difference-between-full-version-and-base-version-of-antix-17/
Then also the whole cups packages are missing, also hplip and hplip-data, in case you have a hp printer.- This reply was modified 4 years, 6 months ago by caprea.

::linux driver HP color Laser 4550 in google.com/ncr

I have no idea why there is no provision for printer installation.
You add up one small utility … and one more … and one more … and one more …
AntiX fits well already on one double DVD to (still not) make everybody happy.
Got it? 😉

::Hm, could it be that I do not have the full installation but only the base? There is no Libreoffice and I see no CUPS.
Is there a simgle list I can use to upgrade from base to full? No idea why I am in this situation but am asking as alternative to doing a new installation.November 5, 2018 at 4:37 pm #13155Moderator

::Hi and thanks. Yes I had seen your earlier post and the list. I note that some applications such as Firefox ESR is installed but not greyed out in your list. Others such as asunder are in the list but I cannot find in the package list from the control center. It is possible that my initial installation was a base set or network installation. I cannot see the detils of the net download.
None of this may be a major issue if there is a single button I can press to install all the packages in the full version that are not in my basic version. Surely I do not have to select each package in turn?
Sorry to be so dumb and grateful for your help.BTW what does system-config-printer in a terminal do? Not a command I recognise.

::Sorry I don’t understand what you mean by firefox is not greyed out in the list.Firefox is not in the list because firefox is installed by default on base and full.
asunder per example is installable in the control-center under system–manage packages (synaptic)
or by typing in the terminal
sudo apt-get install asunderYou probably won’t need all the packages on the list, unfortunately there is no button to simplify the procedure,AFAIK.
To get your printer up and running you can type in terminal
sudo apt-get install cups cups-filters system-config-printer system-config-printer-udev printer-driver-gutenprintThe other cups-packages will be pulléd in as depencies
If your printer is a hp-printer you also need
sudo apt-get install hplip printer-driver-hpijsand last but not least, if your printer has an integrated scanner you also need
sudo apt-get install sane-utils simple-scan libsane-hpaio libsaneAfter you installed all this system-config-printer from terminal will open a GUI for adding a printer to your system, same as clicking in Control Center/Hardware/Setup Printer, which now should also be possible.
This way you can go on and install what you like from the list.Maybe someone else has an idea how to simplify this.
If you still are not sure which version of antix you have installed in terminal type
cat /etc/antix-version`

::Hi caprea, many thanks for this and sorry about confusion with greyed out items. A while ago I started with antix 16.2 full and then upgraded to antix 17 base but how is lost to me. All I know is that now I have the base version and there appears to be no simple switch to move to full version.
At this point in time it will be easier for me simply to install the full version as I shall need office and other stuff as well as printing and scanning from hp multi-function printer. Will find some time this evening (for me) and let you know how I get on.
Will report back with progress and thanks again.

Are you trying to make yourself ridiculous or you try to insult us (for spending any time on trying to help you)?
1. You have working Antix; Did you take yourself 15 min time to take a look around its menues?
2. In the posts above, you got the (simplest possible way) answer on how to install CUPS
3. In the post above you got HP driver link that you were to lazy to google
4. Hope it helps and we all here expect a BIG THANKS:
Oneliner to copy and paste:
sudo apt-get install cups cups-filters system-config-printer system-config-printer-udev printer-driver-gutenprint hplip printer-driver-hpijs sane-utils simple-scan libsane-hpaio libsane gscan2pdf asunder -
