Installing Antix21: “Failed to prepare required partitions”

During a live-cd install of Antix21 (use entire disk with full disk encryption) I got the error message “Failed to prepare required partitions” 9% into the install.

I then used a live-cd of gparted to delete all partitions on the disk and restarted the install.

The same error message was thrown at the same point in install.

I opened a terminal and ran lsblk. It responded with:

How can one get beyond this?

As a first attempt please update the installer before the installation.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --reinstall antix-installer

Progress (I think). I updated the installer as per your note and then attempted to install again. I got an error message saying “Failed to open LUKS container” so I once again deleted the partitions on sda and once again booted the live-cd. The error message “Failed to open LUKS container” appeared yet again.

Please provide the information asked for there starting with the section “Before creating a topic here to ask for help:”, including screenshots of what the gparted and installer disk related screens looked like and details of the steps you took.

You might also read https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/hello-and-thanks-encrypted-usb-disk-problem/ as it looks like the issue is related to encryption.

I suspect you wont have the problem if you don’t try to use encryption, but if that’s important to you, I expect it can be figured out.

Maybe someone can chime in here on where to find the best info on an encrypted install.

you might need to disable automounting of devices. we tried to do this in the installer but I’ve noticed in antiX that sometimes when partitions are created the system still tries to mount them when they are formatted. which will prevent more partitions from being made.

you can disable automounting in the control center. under “disks” I think.

You can also boot the live medium and disable automount at the boot menu (F4 noautomount if using legacy boot).

It looks like I’ll have to use a digital camera for those “screenshots”. I’ll use that method if disabling automount does not resolve the issue.

I would see if one of the proposed solutions work, first.

If not, you could take a screenshot of the gparted screen just before running the installer.

antiX menu >> Applications >> Graphics >> Screenshot

I do think you can also do that while the installer is running when it gets to the screen with the disk information.

You can use MTPaint to erase any sensitive info in the picture before posting it.

You could save it to a separate flashdrive or disk partition, or I use a site called https://imgur.com/upload

I guess the camera would work, too, but it might create a huge picture.

@rokytnji: In regard to the use or lack of use of swap, yes, I do create a swap partition. However, I’ve rarely seen it used AT ALL on any of my systems; I just don’t keep that many things running at the same time. Moreover, ESPECIALLY with antiX, the Web browser is one of the few apps that actually consumes a lot of memory. Frankly, the HIGHEST memory consumption I usually see is somewhere between 1.1 – 1.5 GB, occasionally slightly more; I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen it over 2 GB; even my OLD systems have that much memory, so I very seldom use ANY swap.

Frankly the one application for swap is suspending to disk, and temporarily lowering, but not quite eliminating, all power consumption; even when an operation like that writes to swap, it’s infrequent and doesn’t consume all of it.
