I am running antiX on a twenty year old Compaq which is connected to the internet using a wireless router. My Windows Computer and a Lexmark E260dn printer are also connected to to the router using LAN cables.

I installed cups (sudo apt install cups) and got it started (sudo servce start).

I then opened a browser and went to: localhost:631 . I then clicked on Administration then I clicked on Add Printer. The next screen said: Unable to add printer and below that it said: Forbidden. (According to the Lexmark website, they do have a driver for the E260dn printer.)

Also, when I go to Control Centre and click on Hardware, there is nothing regarding printers or printer wettings.

      What am I missing?

Please give us a bit more info.
Were you root, which groups have you set for user ?.
Normally cups asks for a password before settings can be changed or printer setup/modification.

Regarding control center, which antiX version are you using. Do you have a setup printer entry in the menu.
system-config-printer system-config-printer-common cups-server-common installed ?. you will possibly also need gtklp and libqt5printsupport.

CUPS did ask for a user name and password. The only ones it would accept were my user login and password. I tried entering my user login and what I thought I may have entered during installation as my admin password, but it would not accept it.

          I am running antiX 19.4 386-Base GRUP YORUM dated 20 May 2021.

I did not see a setup printer entry anywhere in the menu.

antiX base doesn’t come with cups support by default (to reduce ISO space).
The printer button in CC comes from the system-config-printer package
            sudo apt install system-config-printer

On antiX 19.4 full, the printer related packages (I have found) installed are:

            cups-bsd
            cups-client
            cups-common
            cups-core-drivers
            cups-filters
            cups-ppdc
            printer-driver-brlaser
            printer-driver-c2050
            printer-driver-c2esp
            printer-driver-cjet
            printer-driver-cups-pdf
            printer-driver-dymo
            printer-driver-escpr
            printer-driver-foo2zjs
            printer-driver-foo2zjs-common
            printer-driver-gutenprint
            printer-driver-hpcups
            printer-driver-hpijs
            printer-driver-m2300w
            printer-driver-min12xxw
            printer-driver-pnm2ppa
            printer-driver-postscript-hp
            printer-driver-ptouch
            printer-driver-pxljr
            printer-driver-sag-gdi
            printer-driver-splix
            system-config-printer
            system-config-printer-udev

There may be others, but this is the quick list I found right now.

Thanks. I ran sudo apt install system-config-printer and got printer settings to show up in Control Centre.

When I click on Add Printer then Network Printer, it asks for Host. I have not figured out what to put there, but it is a step in the right direction.

I will see what suggested programs that did not install when I ran system-config-printer to see if installing any of those will help.

BTW, are there additional installs I should make to make Control Centre complete (since I installed antiX Basic at the beginning). I already have the Firewall.

With system-config-printer, to add a network printer, I just went to
Add > Network Printer > Find Network Printer, and my hp network printer it automatically appears just above “Find Network printers”. I select it, it searches for the needed drivers and installs them, and it is done. My printer just works.

Make sure the firewall configuration is set for it to let the printer connect (stop the firewall when setting up the printer just in case it is to blame).

Thank you Thank you Thank you
Printed a Test Page and a page from LibreOffice.
I created a Firewall to allow in and out on Port 9100. Did I need to do that?

Great to know that you got it to work.

I think that is the correct port for the printer configuration. If it works properly after setting up the firewall configuration, then you know everything is OK.

                    Enjoy printing!

Regarding the Firewall settings: After I messed up big time trying to install an NVIDIA driver (downloaded from VIFDIA’s site) I ended up having to reinstall antiX from scratch to fix things again. This time after installing the Lexmark print driver, I turned the Firewall on, and without setting a rule to open port 9100, I sent a print job to the printer. It went through fine, so I guess there was no need to set up a rule for that. I can always open that port if I have a problem later, but I do not expect that will be necessary. And to keep things working, I am NOT going to try to install the NVIDIA driver for my video card; I will just leave things as they are.

Great. I was afraid that, if the printer is also a scanner, you may have trouble getting it to send the image back to you if the firewall doesn’t permit incoming connections.
As I said before, I know very little on Firewall configuration, so maybe the firewall doesn’t need to be touched at all for network printers. Hopefully your post helps others with the network printer configuration. We are all learning something new as we keep exploring Linux.
