      Hi, guys,
This is a small step by step How to run Libreoffice.org 6 on Antix 16.2, 17 or almost any other linux distro… It also should work with any AppImage application…

I need several features of Libreoffice on my work pc that runs antix 16.2.
I wanted to use the latest version but was unable to install it even on my live, persistant, USB antix 17, either manually installing the deb files or using flatpak.
      So I tried AppImage.
      I went to:

      https://libreoffice.soluzioniopen.com/index.php/stable-2/

and downloaded the desired AppImage file (in my case “LibreOffice-fresh.standard.help.-x86_64.AppImage” It includes localization to my language and help files in my language 🙂 !!!).

I made the AppImage executable and changed it’s permitions (from terminal, on the same folder to where I had downloaded the AppImage, I typed “chmod a+x Libre*.AppImage” (without the commas), but you can do it from your filemanager).
Then I just executed the AppImage file (from my file manager, SpaceFM I right clicked the AppImage and choose “execute”, the very first option).
It worked great, firing up the Libreoffice 6 menu that allows to open files or applications.

But I had 2 problems with it (beside not opening directly writer, the app I wanted):
1-my pc is a netbook with 1 gig ram, very slow, so the seconds it took to uncompress and run the app were precious to me…
2-I had no “easy” way to make file associations to work with this LO6 (if you google you’l find a way). Some AppImage apps do regular file association and even put the apps on your start menu. This LO6 AppImage does not do that…

So I copied the image to a folder on my hard drive… Using SpaceFm filemanager I noticed the mounted AppImage showed up as a mount point, like a regular drive. I clicked it’s folder and copied its contents to my harddrive. It takes about 1 gig of disk space:
      I “installed” it to:

      /home/USERNAME/

and tried it out Writer (the file path is /home/USERNAME/LO6appimage/opt/libreoffice6.0/program/swriter)
It worked great! Almost as fast as the previous LO I have installed on my OS…

Now I just had to associate my file types to this LO6:
right click a ODT (or doc or docx) file on SpaceFM (my prefered file browser) and then I select “open- choose” and then on the text box on the lower end of the window, paste the Libreoffice 6 writer’s location:
      /home/USERNAME/LO6appimage/opt/libreoffice6.0/program/swriter
and checked the box to always use this program.
      Presto!

You can associate spreadsheets and presentions the very same way, changing the end of the command to scalc or simpress, and so on…
After copying the Appimage to your hard drive, you can delete it if you need the space.

A variation of this is sure to work on any AppImage you want, getting it to work on your system without dependency hell or compilation problems. It may take a bit (or lots) more space than a regular install, but it it gives you the chance to test and run the latest version of the apps without messing up your system… If you want to uninstall, just delete the AppImage (or in my case, the folder to where I copied the contents of the AppImage) and you’r done!

I hope I helped some of you that, like me, love using Antix but also love or need to run the latest version of LibreOffice… Please, feel free to offer some feedback!

        Thanks for the post PPC.

AppImages are a very good way to get programs that are not presently (or not at all) in the repos.
LO6 AppImage works just fine on antiX-17 (installed).

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
