      Hi Xecure,

I too had this problem after installing the upgrade on my computer running 19 stable. It was fixed after following the two steps you provided.

In my case, prior to the upgrade, I was using wicd on this system. When I booted up after the install and the wifi didn’t connect to the internet, I tried pinging. pinging google.com didn’t work (service not recognized) but pinging 1.1.1.1. did, so I figured it was a resolvconf issue and wondered if the update knocked out my resolvconf. (This is also what happens when one switches manually between ceni and connman, which had troubled me on my other laptop running a “minimal” install of sid.)

Checking now in htop, I have both connman and wicd listed as processes. When I killed connman, wicd switched from connected to not connected. When I checked the wicd properties, I saw no password for my wifi network. After pasting in the password, it works without connman.

So I am not sure if I was using wicd before (and the password got mysteriously wiped by the connman update or I was never using wicd on this computer. Old age is a bitch!

      Thanks for the rapid fix.

I had the same problem as sybok and stevesr0 above: the connman 1.36-2.3.0antix1 update killed DNS functionality on both WiFi and ethernet but IPV4 addresses were fine. Rolling back to the 1.36-2.1~deb10u2 connman version using synaptic (w/ IPV4 repository names!) fixed it. Thanks for the fix when I re-update net time.

I just edited the resolv.conf manually since it was wiped clean by the update.

          nameserver 8.8.8.8
          nameserver 8.8.8.4

and then made it read-only so it wont get touched by future updates. Don’t know if this is “good practice” but it works… so far.

Hopefully this gets to all those who don’t come to the forum.

Again, sorry for the inconveniences. I will tie myself up next time I want to make a suggestion.

                  Hi blur13,

That approach (blocking updates by modifying the file permission) appeals to me.

At the command line, ls -asl for that file shows “lrwxrwxrwx”. I assume the “l” reflects the fact that /etc/resolv.conf is a symbolic link to the actual file, and the repeated rwx means that anybody could “update” the file.

I looked up the existing groups on this system and don’t see one for the resolv.conf file (I am a very low level computer user). So, if working from the command line, is it only necessary to chmod lrwxrwxr– for this file to prevent “others” (like apt) from changing the file? Or is it necessary to chmod lrwxr–r–?

(Obviously, the question is the same if a graphical tool is used to do this.)

                  thanks.

Interestingly, my laptop running sid was unaffected. It already (I think) had the /etc/resolvconf set up as a symbolic link to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf.

@Xecure- suggestions are the way to move antiX forward, so, no need to tie yourself…

That said- breaking basic OS functions (like accessing the Internet) is something that we, in the OpenSource world mock about Windows, It’s serious because users may not have another way to access the internet and find a fix.
To my knowledge this hapened only twice in MX/antiX in the last 3-4 years- that not a bad track record, but it may scare some users way- If I was a newcommer to any linux distro and, after installing it and performing an update I found myself without internet access my first instinct would be probably to distro hope to some other “more stable” distro.

Including 3 reboots, this “bug” cost me about 10 minutes today. but I was lucky enough to have internet access on my phone and know exactly where to find the fix (as soon as it happened to me, I recalled seeing this thread instantly).

Suggestion: maybe the Control Centre could have an emergency “restore defaults” button that solves problems similar to this, as well as resolution problems, desktop menu anomalies, boot problems, etc, etc…

                    P.

The problem is related to a bug connman is dragging since who knows when (still included in the latest version 1.40). No matter how you try to configure it, the old connman would ALWAYS take control of the resolv.conf symlink when using a script-init based linux system (sysvinit in our case). The patch makes it possible to stop this behavior and makes it optional.
The included (in the new package) /etc/default/connman file brings the option that disables this aggressive behavior, so the /etc/resolv.conf is not replaced when connman starts. This would make it possible for connman to run at the same time as ceni is being used (no longer any conflicts).

What I didn’t expect in my tests on Live USB is that the /etc/resolv.conf symlink does NOT change or is removed on the next reboot. I tested the change on a Live USB and the symlink was OK, pointing at /et/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf, but I didn’t expect that the symlink remains on installed systems.

So, to all those who are afraid of an update to connman will change /etc/resolv.conf, that will not happen. The problem is that the update did NOT change the old /etc/resolv.conf, so as connman is no longer aggressively taking control over it, it still points to a no longer used file. That is why the two options I provided are:
                      A. Remove the new configuration file, so that connman works the same as before (aggressively replacing /etc/resolv.conf symlink on each reboot).
B: Change the /etc/resolv.conf symlink to a file that will not break DNS resolving even if connman is not running (before, you had to change this symlink every time you switch from/to ceni/connman; no, this is no longer needed).

I didn’t expect that the aggressive behavior is more reliable than the passive one.

                      Again, sorry for the problems.

FWIW – I have updated my main laptop running antiX-19 – no connman breakage at all.
I updated my antiX sid desktop – no connman breakage at all.
I updated all my antiX frugal installs (sid, testing, beta bullseye, buster) – you guessed it – no connman breakage at all.

The above systems run a mixture of connman running with wired and wireless.

I must be the lucky one.

                          Hi stevesr0,

I’m not an expert so I dont know if this method will have any unintended consequences, but I deleted the file/link resolv.conf (rm command as root) and created a new one. Then

                          sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf

The command will add immutable bit, so the file doesn’t get overwritten. After you set immutable bit, even the root account will not be able to write to the file. If you wish to edit the file again latter on, and remove immutable bit, use this command:

                          sudo chattr -i /etc/resolv.conf

                                Dear All,

I found the same thing yesterday with “antiX-bullseye-b1-x64-full”. I can’ t connect with the ethernet cable anymore. I thought it was a bug in the test version. As I don’t have wifi on my desktop, I deleted Antix completely.
Is it serious doctor? Yes, now I work with Windows 10.
I don’t do updates on my old laptop anymore to protect my Antix 19 Full (no Wifi installed on it, only by ethernet cable).

                                Best regards,
                                Wallon

Had same symptoms after my update on my IBM Laptop. Lost Wifi so I connected to hardline and still no browser home page. So I just incorporated the below fix

                                sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
                                sudo ln -s /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

Since step one said I had no such file to remove. In case that comes up for you. I rebooted. Just tested again. Everything works with conman again. I don’t use ceni. Just conman.

                                Good Luck.
