Hi, new user of this distro. I’m a retired long time Linux user, (since ’94) of the Debian distro, as I use it on my home LAN and workstation, and now on a 10-year-old Laptop with ‘antiX’ installed! I can’t believe how much more efficient this distro is with a low memory computer!
Previously I was using vanilla Debian on this laptop, (4Gb ram) with the i3 Window Manager, and it took considerably more memory to run than antiX! So I’m happy!BTW for some reason antiX doesn’t see my entire ram, only 2 Gb of 4, and I’m sure I used the 64 bit image. Of course, my BIOS sees all of it, so suggestions would be appreciated.

::Hi marathon,
welcome to the global village of antixia.for some reason antiX doesn’t see my entire ram, only 2 Gb of 4,
Maybe good to remove ram, if it is not soldered to board that is, be careful of static.
Carefully clean contacts with a soft pencil erazer, do not touch with fingers,
take a lint free cloth and keep wiping the contacts until you are convinced that there are
no traces of eraser residue left.
Blow out ram slots with compressed air to clean them. I use a magnifier to check no dirt left.
Reinstall.
Do the memory test of your choiceSome laptops have RAM soldered to the board, fixing any cracked or broken contacts or replacing
is a specialist or risky operation. Most older laptops benefit from a careful CPU cooler clean up and usualy replacement of the coupling
compound between CPU and heat sink. I use and recommend the
non conductive arctic paste these days.
Please do not blow in to the vent to discharge dirt, that spreads inside the case, there is also
danger of overspeeding the fan causing bearing damage or worse. Fans should be carefuly cleaned with a
soft brush then gently with compressed air while holding the rotor still with the brush bristles. Most fans can benifit from some fresh bearing lubrication, easy in most cases, if care is taken.
Please bear with me, you may know all of above, other visitors to the forum may not.

::Hi and welcome. You are a Linux veteran, but it’s still nice to point out that antiX does have it’s peculiarities, like a very unusual default File Manager (rox-filer) and a more Mainstream looking one (zzzfm). You can easily switch between both File Managers- also there are sticky posts to help ease out the transition from other OS’s to antiX.
On your RAM problem- before you try to follow Moddit’s excellent advice- if you boot your computer to any other OS, does that OS detect the 4 Gb? The memory stick may simply be busted- that happened to me once.
antiX is perfectly usable, for most tasks with 2 Gb (even with 1 Gb, with some caution), but if you have more RAM, all that RAM should be usable!P.

::Hello marathon.
Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.
I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.
Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:
What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum. When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.
I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.
Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support in this forum, please explain in detail what is happening, don’t mince words, be thorough when writing, tell your computer characteristics such as make and model. If possible, post the result of the command $ inxi -Fxz from the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic that you are going to create in this forum.
When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

Thanks, yes it does have pecularities and that’s A-OK 🙂
Indeed it works fine with the 2Gb, but I’d like to use all my ram. I had the same issue on the i3 window manager, yet Cinnamon and Gnome see it all. So, got me thinking that perhaps antiX is 32bit arch …November 14, 2022 at 1:55 pm #93200Member
