As with recent CPU and Graphics updates, another big upgrade of a fairly legacy feature, –audio sound APIs and Servers.

There were a lot of errors and slightly off things in the previous versions. Also added support for RoarAudio, NAS servers, and fixed some of the glitches with OSS and sndio, and enhanced some BSD vs Linux handling for those.

Some of the helper detections rely on globbing of known file locations, that’s the case for pipewire-alsa and pulseaudio-jack, which can be detected by their modules being present, or other files, but not by an executable in PATH, but I felt it important to be aware that those are installed since they impact how the sound servers work, and might point to issues in a user’s setup etc.

As usual, these fixes are now running in pinxi:

      # if already installed
      pinxi -U
      # or install first:
      cd /usr/local/bin && wget -O pinxi smxi.org/pinxi && chmod +x pinxi

The way the various compatibility plugins, daemons, and modules work made this fairly tricky to get closer to right than before. I’m removing the Device info from the output since that has not changed.

Any input, glitches, improvements, etc appreciated, this one was a headache to get working better and I”m not filled with confidence it’s correct in all cases.

A few notes: the ‘with:’ items are basic helpers for the sound api/server, like daemons, compatibility plugins/modules, etc. The ‘tools:’ are the main control and reporting tools per sound api/server, I tried to keep these at a mininum, just enough to let support people, or you, know that the tools/utilities are installed, but nothing more since earlier drafts were way too verbose.

Sample error (pipewire is not in fact running):

      inxi -Ax --vs
      inxi 3.3.25-00 (2023-02-07)

        Sound Server-2: PipeWire v: 0.3.65 running: yes

Upgraded in pinxi with -A, -Ax, -Axx, -Aa

Special root handling was required because the jack/pipewire/pulseaudio status tools fail as superuser:

      sudo pinxi -Aa

Server-2: PulseAudio v: 16.1 status: active (root, process)
          tools: pacat,pactl,pavucontrol

Here’s a more advanced vm instance I tested on with most of the servers/apis I could find running.

AntiX 23 Beta1 with fully working sound.

i.e. not updated to latest ytdlp
which consistently kills sound not video from MPV on all my devices and some
from users. My dirty workaround, Pinned ytdlp to keep the music playing…

Will test on a fresh download of the beta today to ensure no changes made by either
me or affected users are cause of trouble.

Active device is the Audigy card which gives much superior sound quality compared to
              my other options.

                        Tnanks for the samples/tests.

So AntiX ships without pulse/pipewire in some configurations? that’s clean and simple, nice, assuming pinxi did not miss anything.

These look good so far, assuming that what pinxi is saying about the Sound Server/APIs is correct, of course.

Brian, you managed to trip the EDID warning error handler, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that actually run, was something I added just in case if I remember right, so that appears to be working. It doesn’t mean anything in particular, just that there was some type of data inxi doesn’t know about or which is expected and not there, I forget.

Does this -A, -Ax, -Axx, -Aa syntax, field names, etc, make sense more or less? I’ve tweaked it a lot over past days as I realized the old function, variable, and field names did not accurately reflect what is actually going on, but it’s always a bit of a compromise.

Yes, some configurations, like mine, don’t have all the fancy stuff; I got rid of a few things too.
I’m glad I was able to exercise some functionality. I did notice when I ran privileged stuff, I had to add either the relative or absolute path to my command because I keep my own private instances of pinxi in my own ~/bin directory, which is NOT in the default sudo path.

Yes, the varying degree of information provided with the various options does indeed make sense.
I don’t often seek just particular stuff, but as a community we do occasionally look specifically for audio information, graphics information, or general system information, depending on the question the user asks and what we want to look at as we attempt to diagnose their issue.

Always running the HUGE report as I did, while certainly complete, is unnecessary UNLESS we need a complete view to get the “right picture”.
I think we have the inxi -zv8 view in our full inxi-gui tool.

So AntiX ships without pulse/pipewire in some configurations? that’s clean and simple, nice, assuming pinxi did not miss anything.

Correct. One of the reasons I gravitated to antiX.

From antiX dwm 22 spin based on antiX Core; pinxi -Aa –vs.
