HateDogsBarking
So I tried installing my Canon printer (see other thread) and apparently I did something wrong.
After a reboot I get the following screen:
“Welcome to Antix. Powered by Debian.
antix1 login:”I have never seen this screen before as I chose during the installation to login to my account automatically.
And when I enter my username fchopin it asks “Password:”
When I give my password and press enter I get the following:Last login: Mon Jun 29 19:33:41 CEST 2020 on tty1
No mail.
fchopin@antix1:~
$And nothing happens after this. How do I login to my account again?
When I try “sudo startx” the following message appears:
[sudo] password for fchopin:
When I give my password and press enter I get the following:
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: 3: exec: /usr/bin/X: not found
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to x server: Connection refused
xinit: server error- This topic was modified 2 years, 10 months ago by HateDogsBarking.

::According to this (for ubutu) https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2403057.html
sudo startxcould do the trick… If not, read here https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2340960.html.
Wait for someone else to answer this post – and publish more information: from your previous thread I know you are running a fully updated antiX core… 32 bits or 64 bits? Did you have the default IceWM desktop installed? Video driver? Please post all that info, so folks here can try to help… This is way more serious than a missing printer driver… I hope someone can help you fix this.

::If X won’t start (with sudo startx), save the output of inxi -Fxz in a file so you can share it with us.
(in your non working installed system) Log in and, in the terminal and, do:
inxi -Fxz > $HOME/Documents/brokeninxi.txtYou will now require a live system.
When booting to a live system, select the session Space-icewm (if you cannot see it, boot and, after launching the desktop, go to the menu > Desktop > Other desktops > Space-Icewm).
Open the File manager (it will now be SpaceFM). On the left side you will see your partitions. If you did a normal install, your home folder should be located in the partition named rootantiX (if yoou created a home partition during installation,it will be in the home partition). Click on it to mount that partition (it will open it in a new tab). Navigate to the home folder > user > Documents and you will se the file brokeninxi.txt you created earlier. Share it in the new reply.
Also, share your current inxi -Fxz (in the live system) to compare.
Finally, in the root partition of your installed system, navigate to /var/log/apt/ and open history.log file. Go down to the end of the file and look at all apt changes marked with today’s date. Copy them (from the first of today’s date to the end of the file) and also share them with us in the forum.Summary:
A. Borken installed system. Log in and do
inxi -Fxz > $HOME/Documents/brokeninxi.txtB. Start a live system with Spacefm-Icewm desktop.
1. In the file manager, click on your rootantiX partition. inside, go to home/user/Documents and share the brokeninxi.txt with us.
2. Share the inxi -Fxz of the live system.
3. Share the /var/log/apt/history.log entries for todays date with us (make sure this is the rootantiX partition)antiX Live system enthusiast.

::Not sure what the reason of a live system is. Is it required or can I also just upload photos of my screen?
Here is the output from “inxi -Fxz”.I have upload errors here. For the photo please see it here: https://www.reddit.com/user/WhyIsThisTimeDifrent/comments/hi6ehp/001_inxi_fxz/

::The life system was for convenience, in case there is no other way for you to share the info. Also, with a working live system, we could also compare the graphical drivers used.
Your way of uploading a photo will also work. Hopefully your resolution is good enough to see the whole inzi -Fxz output. If it cannot, use “Shift + Page Up” will go up in the terminal.

::@Xecure: My eyes are not that good, but I magnified the photos- If I’m reading correctly x-server got removed, along with elongin… what??? You’r better at this sort of stuff than me…
@Hatedogs: yes, your attempts at installing everything you though you needed to make your printer work did remove some essential files… wait for Xecure to go through your screen shots and reply to you…

::I see two issues. The first one.
Start Date: 2020-06-29 15:22:50 Commandline: apt dist-upgrade -- Remove: libpam-elogind-compat:amd64 (1.3) End-Date: 2020-06-29 15:31:57This has also affected another user today. I think this package removes itself but is not replaced by libpam-elogind. This is easy to check is
dpkg -s libpam-elogind dpkg -s elogindLook at the status (it should be Status: install ok installed)
If they are not installed
sudo apt install elogind libpam-elogind
But this is not the main issue. The biggest problem is this one:
Start-Date: 2020-06-29 17:07:59 Commandline: apt-get install system-config-printer-udev libudev1 -- Remove: every single important xorg package in the world. This has killed you system. You installed the system-config-printer-udev and it doesn’t want to live with your graphical interface.
You may be able to fix it with
sudo apt purge system-config-printer-udev libudev1
and then install xorg
sudo apt install xorgEdit: I was ninja’d by PPC.

Should I still do: sudo apt install xorg

::Oh. Now we have an idea of how bad you of a shape you put your installation… You tried to install stuff that depends on systemd. antiX does not use systemd.
You tried to install Konqueror, etc…
Well, in my opinion trying sudo apt install xorg can’t make it any worse… Iit seems that some more essential antiX files got really botched…In the future, please don’t install stuff not meant for antiX! Try installing and using synaptic package manager (if it doesn’t come out of the box with antiX core) and use it, or the package installer, to install applications (remember me saying to first test the printer driver on a live install or virtual machine, because it was not tested in antiX? It was to avoid this kind of situations).
Edit: Xecure, you’r faster than me 🙂

::It’s OK. We all make mistakes. I remember breaking my first antiX install (I still don’t know what I did wrong xD).
Let us hope we can recover from this. Worst case scenario is having to backup the home folder and reinstalling. Let ‘s try to save as much as possible.
