I have been trying to install the correct drivers for my Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 graphics card and I am getting some error. I am very new to this and have no idea what to do to resolve this issue. Attached is the log of when I ran the smxi as instructed in the smxi section of AntiX help page.
Edit: cannot attach .log file so here is the error:ERROR: (226) The driver you selected: 304.137 does not support your current Xorg version: 1.20.11
If this is wrong, please let the script maintainer know.
You can override this test with -! 6 option. If install works, let maintainer know.- This topic was modified 2 months, 2 weeks ago by snek.

::There is no attached log file.
Also how did you try to install the driver? Did you use Package Installer? What version of antiX are you using? 17,19,21,22,23a1? 32/64 bits? Full/Base/etc?P.

::You are using bullseye repo, so antiX21/22,what the xorg version tells. In debian for your card, there’s no driver in bullseye.
The last official supported version was buster. There’s in menu > control-centre > drivers a nvidia-driver-installer.It opens during installation the MX repos and then your driver (304.xxx), which is normally to old for debian, can get installed.
Unfortunately my laptop with such an old card broke and I can’t test the driver-installation for old cards with nvidia-driver-installer in time.
It should work, if it doesn’t, we have to look why, might /var/log/ddm.log gives hint.February 23, 2023 at 4:45 pm #100461Member

::@ OP: Hi, AFAIK there’s No More support for Linux nvidia legacy drivers for newer versions of Linux, IMHO you will have more luck installing previous versions of Linux like Linux Mint 20.3, LMDE 4 or previous version of AntiX or Ubuntu, or installing Windows on that machine, Windows update will install the correct driver for your Nvidia GPU!
LMDE 5 Cinnamon x64 on MSI H61M-P25 (B3)
MX-21 x64 on Panasonic ToughBook CF-C1 | Dell Latitude E6410
AntiX-22 x64 on HP DC5750 Small Form Factor

::The driver installer didn’t work either. Error:

Uh oh. Your card is only supported by older legacy drivers which are not in any current Debian suite.this is the part of the log that most resembles an error

::Hi snek, not enough detail of your hardware and antiX version.
As caprea, who
“definitely does know what he is talking about”
posted, you might not be able to run latest antiX but all hope
is far from lost.February 24, 2023 at 12:40 am #100503Forum Admin

::What is wrong using
Use of the 340-series driver is strongly discouraged. It is not included in stable releases of Debian anymore, has serious unfixable security vulnerabilities, and may not be updated for new kernels in a timely manner. You are highly recommended to use the
built-in Nouveau driverif security is a priority.
Only thing I can use on this is why I mention it.

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problemsFebruary 24, 2023 at 9:48 am #100524MemberRobin
::I only was just aware of this thread, hence I didn’t answer before. I’m running antiX (32bit) on the the 6600 go myself.
It works really fine on nouveau driver, but only after upgrading your kernel to 5.19.0.deb11.2-686-pae debian version. All nouveau before this kernel is broken (I believe I remember that 5.10.142-antiX kernel could do it already, but have not tested this extensively), while running 5.19 continously on antiX 22 for a long period of time now, completely stable.
But if you really and urgently want to use the proprietary 304.137 drivers for some reason, this is possible at least on antiX 19, I’ve done it myself following these instructions: So simply follow precisely the steps from this posting by burrezo. Even when it reads 64 bit, this works on 32 bit systems as well, just apply the instructions analogously, using 32bit components instead. After succeeding with installation you can even use the nvidia-settings tool to setup twinview and detailed colour presets properly. This setup works completely stable, have run it for at least one year.
While this is for antiX 19, you could try to perform the very steps on antiX 21/22. No Idea whether it works, haven’t tried this, after noticing that nouveau works that fine on this card when running the new kernel. (Had not time to check out nouveau as present in the 6.x kernel on this device, so you might want to give the most recent antiX 6.1.11 kernel a try.)Summary about the 6600 go:
On antiX 17 you can install the 304.137 proprietary driver directly from the packages.
On antiX 19 you need to follow the steps from burrezo (downgrade xorg temporarily, set xorg-core on hold, apply the patches to the nvidia driver package.)
On antiX 21/22 update the kernel to 5.19.0 and use nouveau instead of proprietary nvidia stuff.Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

::Hi all, my experience with the the 5.10.142 on NVidia equipped devices has been
terrible.
Only boot fails with green screens. Have no experience with 5.19.
6.1 providing much improved graphics and stability, no more experience of boot fails,
oldest tested device is core 2 duo which is 64 bit.Performance seems ok.
But not benchmarked on same device with the NVidia drivers installed. -
