I first installed antiX19 on a Compaq computer over 20 years old last summer (late July or early August). At that time there was a taskbar and a menu button at the bottom of the Desktop. I then used the Compaq for other things for a while and reinstalled antiX19 and later antiX21 this week. Now there is no taskbar nor a menu button. I am just curious if there has been a change that elimates those items for those of us with limited RAM. My Compaq has about 750 MB of RAM. I access the menu by right clicking on the Desktop. This does not present a problem and I am sure the additional free memory is beneficial, so I am good with how antiX is working now and am not looking to change anything. I am just curious if such a change was made or if it is because I had to use Failsave Boot to install antiX this time.

::Sound like you are running Fluxbox. Right click, select “Desktop” – “Other desktops”, and choose the one you want, Rox-IceWm is the default.

::Hello antixjim.
I don’t remember sending you some basic instructions and the excellent tutorials created by @PPC:
What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.
I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded. In addition to the options with the IceWM, JWM and Fluxbox window managers, there is HerbstluftWM (which I have no idea how to pronounce this word) in antiX.
Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support, post the output of the terminal command $ inxi -Fxz, copy and paste it in the message of the topic you are going to create in this forum.
When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

::Hi, Jim
I am just curious if such a change was made or if it is because I had to use Failsave Boot to install antiX this time.
A: No, as far as I know, no change removing the toolbar was made in antiX. antiX comes with 3 floating window managers ( IceWM, Fluxbox and JWM) and they all have, out of the box, a toolbar configured to be displayed, on the bottom of the scree. Fluxbox has a toolbar, but no “menu” button on it (but it can be added). antix also comes with a Tiling window manager, Herbs… that also comes with a toolbar, on the top of the screen…
So there’s is something missing or misconfigured in your system, if you don’t get to see a toolbar… try following the advice to switch Desktops and try another window manager (the default one is Icewm).
You can also try to install the ft10-transformation package, and enable it in antiX menu, it provides a tint2 toolbar, configured with a customized jgmenu…

::Actually, I just discovered today that under Desktop there is an option: RoxPanel on/off. It turned out this was set to off. When I clicked on it the panel showed up at the top of the desktop. I know there are options to configure the panel and move it to the bottom of the Desktop. So that answers my question. It was probably just turned off and had not been configured. For now I plan to leave it off.

::Rox-panel is an additional panel, which as you have already found out, you can switch on and off.
According to your description you are missing the taskbar.June 3, 2022 at 12:25 am #84030Member
