I wanted to start a new thread so as not to hijack the others.

Booting 23a1 with 6.1 kernel, it looks like nothing is happening for about 2 minutes, after the grub screen. 5.10 & lower don’t have this issue.

So I removed the “quiet” boot code from /etc/default/grub, and I see where it gets stuck, but I can’t make sense of it.

It stops at the first image for about 90 seconds, then 30 more seconds at the second image.

Does anyone have any idea how to get it to zip through, as the other kernels do?

      Thanks, all.

Let us know the hardware, Christoph, please.
You could look with dmesg, for the moments when it hangs.Might gives hints. Something like
sudo dmesg | grep -C10 clocksource
It will show some lines before and after clocksource.

Now, the strangest thing: I made an iso-snapshot of that installed system, and ran it frugal from the very same computer/hdd. And it only took 4 seconds to load the kernel!

So I don’t know why the installed system gets stalled as it does. I’ll keep searching, and report back if I can find anything. For curiosity & testing’s sake more than anything (since I personally prefer frugal, anyway).

booted just now with new antiX kernel 6.1.10-antix.1-amd64-smp on antiX/Debian testing, no issues – boots fast.

            couple of (wild) guesses :
            1) is the hard drive failing or something? what’s smart status ? read/write speeds?
            or
            2) another hwish thing, like laptop CMOS battery needing change? is the laptop clock working ok?

This must have been a quirk in the system, but I doubt that it has anything to do directly with any of the 6.1 kernels.
I’ve tried both our 6.1.10 and our 6.1.11 kernels on the “intended” repo set and also mixing them.
I’ve also tried other 6.1 kernels and none of them exhibit any issues – no delays, no memory issues or leaks, good performance and response.

Also today I specifically checked to see if they RELEASE resources when large programs are closed; yes they do, and it doesn’t take long for it to happen either.

So all the kernels (and I’ve also tested them on a couple of different systems) are working fine.

The 92-minute SMART long test results were “passed.”
And the clock & cmos are fine, too.

As I wrote, it doesn’t happen on the 5.10 kernel.
Nor does it happen when I run that (6.1) kernel as frugal. So I’m mystified, but not concerned.

All my “permanent” systems are set up as frugal, anyway. So that’s how I’ve reset my antiX 23 test system to run, going forward.

I figure it must be something with my hardware and/or that kernel, but not antiX, since no one else has any issues.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. 🙂
