Hello I am trying to update from AntiX 17 to a newer version on this 32 bits machine.
With AntiX 20 and AntiX 21 every time I am trying to boot up from DVD – it freezes after 2 minutes and some 30 seconds. It is not installing.
Can someone give me a piec of advice?
The whole configuration is Athhlon XP 1700+ with 1 GB DDR1 and videocard ATI Radeon 256 MB
Processor is a non SSE2 one – could it be due to this?
I really appreciate the AntiX 17 because I have experienced a good stability in the last 2 years.
By the way I can experiment as this is the garage PC

Thank you!I will try to run again with AntiX 22 Base on 32 Bits and also use the newer version AntiX 17 and see which can install.
Anyway I will try to apply all the tricks I have in order to have a relatively new OS.

How about testing whether antiX-19 (based on Debian 10 = Buster) works?
Buster’s LTS’ EOL is June 2024, Extended LTS is June 2029.

antiX-19 series ISOs can be downloaded from ‘sourceforge’ (which had a bad reputation with some programs being tampered with); I did try two other mirrors but they did not contain it anymore.
You have two options to try: 1) 19.5 with 4.9 kernel (from 2022 = more up-to-date packages) and 2) 19.4 with 4.19 kernel (from 2021 = older packages).

            https://sourceforge.net/projects/antix-linux/files/Final/antiX-19/

Since you can experiment, you may try to install antiX-19 in dual/multi-boot and try to upgrade it to Debian 11 a.k.a. Bullseye.
This would probably be lengthy and tedious but it could result into a working system similar to up-to-date antiX-21.

Also, did you check-sum the downloaded ISOs for integrity before creating the live DVD?

Other than that… you may search the forum for ISO/USB boot issues; I recall posts discussing passing boot-options manually in case of problems.

            Source:
            https://wiki.debian.org/DebianReleases#Production_Releases
            https://wiki.debian.org/LTS
            https://wiki.debian.org/LTS/Extended

BTW, there is no (official) antiX-20; only antiX-21 and antiX-22 (at least so far).

I have an old Athlon XP from that era, non-SSE2, as well. I installed antiX 19 or 21 on it a while back (although I can’t remember which).
I was able to get it working well (for its age, that is). Now, for reasons I won’t go into here, I no longer have this setup, so I only can go on memory for this post…

Regarding your trying to boot antiX 19/21/22 on this computer:

Try removing the text boot code “splasht”. That may get it to reach the desktop.

Also, if that doesn’t work, try safe video mode or failsafe mode, on the boot screen.

I recall having trouble booting from the CD/DVD, like you did. I think I had to use one of those boot options.

So, try out those & see if it will boot all the way.

              confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

I have a couple of REALLY old systems too; I got rid of two (still useful, but SLOW) 32-bit systems that I had for nearly a decade, only to pick up a couple more ancient ones, which most of the time I keep in a corner. They work, but after using any of my newer systems, they feel almost painfully slow to start, though that’s probably even what my professional workstation was like in the days that I worked on UNIX system utilities (mostly security and defect updates), also internationalization and localization additions and corrections.

Those days are so far in the distant past that many of the specific details have become “foggy” in my mind, except for memories of a few of my friends who worked for the same company. I will say one thing: even the desktop environment was lighter in image size and features than the full featured desktop environments today. Things like fvwm and fvwm-crystal have not changed very much, except for security updates, defect resolution and rare feature updates.

                  Hello mfmig2000.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original text in Brazilian Portuguese language directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

When you are able to get antiX to boot on your computer, please read my real welcome that I usually do for all newcomers here on the forum. This reading will help you a lot.

I’ve been able to initialize antiX with the ISOs Remaster antiX 21 Full 32 and 64-bit with Kernel 4.4.0-296 on computers similar to yours. Download the 64bit ISO which has the name “remaster_antiX-21_sysvinit_x64_full_kernel_4.4.0-296_01-15-2022.iso”, it seems this processor is 64bit. If you manage to install this ISO, you can update antiX 21 to version 22 via the update.

Hello Marcelo thank you for the suggestion – Athlon XP 1700+ is a 32 Bits processor I will try also with your remastered image if the rest of the solutions are not working.

Have you tried the “safe” and “failsafe” choices when you try to boot from DVD? Christophe mentioned this above but I haven’t seen that you have tried these options yet.

I also have an Athlon XP based system and have successfully installed both antiX-21 and MX-21. I have also used Marcelo’s remaster successfully.

Do you have a working USB port? You should try Plop in the DVD and then try to boot from USB.

antiX Live DVD also has the option for loading from USB. You boot from the DVD but then set to FromUSB for the rest of the load.

You should try all of these options before we continue to troubleshoot. Even if you don’t get the results you wanted it can tell us a lot about what may be the issue.

hello Seaken64 – I will try it today as it is closely weekend time so I have this weekend time to try all these tricks – sorry I was not that fast in this week due to some work issues that I have to get done.
So today will be the start of new journey.

Non sse2 cpu limits browser choices as far as I understand.

When I fought the Acer T180 single core desktop, For some reason. USB boot quit working. A puppy linux user mentioned to me.

Flash-drive manufacturers changed the firmware specs in the mid-2010s. Where they used to be seen AS flashdrives, older BIOS versions subsequently began to see them as a USB-HDD…..meaning they were expecting to find the “bridge card” all external HDDs use to convert the drive’s SATA output to a USB interface. Of course, flash drives don’t have it, do they?
And they call this “progress”. Just another way to persuade ya to chuck a perfectly good box in the trash, and shell out for summat new that like as not won’t work any better…..

Finally shoe horned antiX 21 64 bit full iso off of dvdrw drive.
This was not 32 bit full iso. But same principle applies.

So on these older units. Dust tends to collect over time. Then I usually have to run the

Hello and thank you a lot for all the advices – I have succeeded in installing the latest AntiX 22 base – that trick to disable Splash has worked well – so what I can say it is really snappy and due to limitation in RAM consumption is really make it a great job in revive my old garage PC!
I am even able to watch youtube with the SMTube + VLC at 360p which is great! However I am experience a little bit more minor stops than in MS Windows XP but I have now all the support and packages from AntiX.
I really like also that Palemoon Non SSE2 is in the software package and I can install in a few clicks!
what I like also best at AntiX is that installation does not take so much time like with Q4OS 32 Bits.
                            Thank you everyone!

It’s great to know that the official ISO worked well for you.
Now, don’t forget to read this:

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.

I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.

Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support in this forum, please explain in detail what is happening, don’t mince words, be thorough when writing, tell your computer characteristics such as make and model. Fantastic! Glad you got antiX 21/22 installed.

I pulled my Athlon XP out today to confirm that antiX 21 wworks. It does. But the internal WiFi does not work. I started up with MX-18 also and it is working fine with a USB dongle.

This old system is almost capable as a daily driver. I can also use SMTube and Streamtuner to watch YT videos.

Here’s the inxi when logged in to MX-18:

                                $ inxi -Fxz

Note that this version of the Athlon XP supports SSE2. I use SeaMonkey mostly. But Palemoon is also good.
