Since this is twice now you have encourage me to create my own re-spin, and since the process is so simple I do think I’ll take you up one it.

      Game Plan:

      • I’ll start with your version instead of the default antiX
      • 2 version : One with all sessions, and the other with only a JWM session.
      • Continue what you started by maintaining a libre focus
      • Go full force with the comic like appearance in the JWM session 🙂
      • JWM will have it’s own icon theme different from the other sessions
      • JWM will have it’s own conky config different from other sessions
      • A low resolution variation of the jwm conky config
      • Use the antiX logout prompt, but in JWM give it the same toggle behavior jwmkit_logout has

EDIT : I don’t think the single session version is worth the effort. I might reconsider in the future. A non office version might be a better idea.

I threw this together yesterday. Feel free to use and modify it in anyway.

@@jwm-kit, did you change user or password for the live-session ? I can’t log in.

Wow, you did a respin, awesome!

I was completely slammed with work last week, finally had time to put up my own buuf-icon respin: https://archive.org/details/snapshot-20220301_2142
Here’s the Mega upload for faster direct downloads: https://mega.nz/folder/mYNlTIhR#4l1Xv44s0VpaJrSVTUJ__A

This will be quite fun to try them both. Yours is probably far better than mine, JWM-KIT. And I see that anticapitalista added your deb package to the antiX repo, so we can just keep updating it through the system moving forward I hope.

As you said above, passwords are antix / antix and root / root.

Nice job. I doubt my is “far better”. It maybe better in someways, but your build has it’s own advantages. I defiantly think we can make use of each others work to make improvements. There are certain things about mine that I prefer because it matches my own preference. For example I can’t tolerate single click activation in the file manager/desktop? YUCK!. I have a habit of double clicking so when it’s set to single click I end up opening everything twice. Also I really depend on using single click to select items.

When I saw the black menu in the picture I didn’t think I’d like it, but when I actually use it I like it. Amazing how the difference between a static picture and the real moving things seem different to the eyes.

Maybe when I get a chance I’ll do like you did and add jwm sessions with zzzFM/ROX desktops. Also notice you are using the “remix” version of the icons. I’ll check that out too. I’m sure there are other things in your build that could improve mine.

I noticed one thing about the zzzfm desktop that is really annoying. If you change the screen resolution the desktop does not adjust to the the new resolution. This will cause the wallpaper to not fit the screen and it will be tiled, or stretched out of view. Also icons can appear off the screen. Restarting the desktop is the only way to fix this. I made a shortcut in the right click menu called zzzrestart that restart the desktop by running the command : pkill zzzfm && zzzfm –desktop

This above solution works fine for my purpose but I’d think a more eloquent solution requiring less user action would be nice. Maybe wrap the execution of ARandR in a script that restarts the desktop if zzzfm is the current desktop? Does the official antix iso have the way of dealing with this? I’ll take a look when I get a chance.

One last thing. I’m sure you notice the file name for my iso was similar to yours but I add the -JWMKit-. The idea was to specify that it built on top of your iso. Not trying to steal your name 🙂 If you have an issue with that let me know and I’ll call it something else if and when I do future builds.

I wouldn’t bother with boof-remix if I were you, it has all the same icons as the version of buuf in the antiX repos as far as what I needed, with the addition of one icon for the cherrytree program. I started using the buuf-remix icons before anticapitalista mentioned that the regular buuf icons were already in the antiX repo. I need to go back through and remove the links to the buuf-remix icons and convert them to the regular buuf icons.

Interesting, I’ll take a look, hadn’t noticed that.

No problem, feel free. anticapitalista told me last year to be sure and use “Respin” in the name and description if I called it some form of antiX, so that’s been my only naming guide. Otherwise I just try to make the name be descriptive. At some point, if you continue working with it, I’m sure your version will become something far different than what I’ve envisioned. As I said early on, you can probably see a lot of potential in antiX for making a great showcase distro for JWMKIT.

Just checkout antiX-21_386-base.iso in a virtual machine and it has the same issue with zzzfm not resizing the desktop when the resolution changes. Selecting the session from Desktop–>other Desktops restarts the desktop and fixes it. So it’s nothing you caused. Which was what I was assuming.

I checked out your respin and like some of your ideas. Removing all the different settings apps from the main menu and accessing them through the JWM Kit Settings manager through the “Settings” menu option makes the main menu much cleaner.

I’m not sure how you used the antiX “Exit Session” dialog box with the Log Out and Shutdown and Reboot options, but I like it a lot.

The default JWM Kit configuration hides the settings menu and replaces it with jwmkit_settings. This is the same configuration you have on your respin.

Then I used jwmkit_freedesktops to make sure that all items I want in the settings panel have the settings (or X-antiX) category, and remove any other category to prevent them from show elsewhere in the menu. I also have chosen to move some items from their original category to the JWMKit settings panel by replace the original category with either the settings, or X-antiX category

To top it all off I manually added jwmkit_settings to the menu in the top area and then use freedesktops to set jwmkit_settings to hidden. This prevents it from showing in the System menu, but you still see where it was manually added to the menu.

I’m not sure how you used the antiX “Exit Session” dialog box with the Log Out and Shutdown and Reboot options, but I like it a lot.

All you have to do is use JWM Kit Trays and Menus to change the commands for logout entries from jwmkit_logout to desktop-session-exit

Of course this will not give the same behavior as mine. If you notice I’ve configured it where if you click the logout tray button (or menu entry) while the Exit Session dialog is already open it will close it. This is because I wrote a small script and linked the traybutton and menu actions to it. You can find the script on the live session here : /usr/local/bin/exit_toggle.sh

I was wondering what you thought about the hidden panel at the top that drops down when you hover over it. If you right click on some of the icons you will find some additional options.

                        Top panel - browser menu

                        Top panel - office menu

I did not even see it for some reason. Love it!! I noticed that your JWM respin is still weighing in at just 83mb of ram usage on my Dell laptop. These are incredibly low memory usage numbers!

That’s the problem with a hidden panel. People don’t see it. I do love the functionality of a hidden panel though. It gets out of the way when not in use but if you know it’s there it’s quick to access.

Yes both of our respins are low on memory *usage. I’ve thought about making use of zram on my JWM Kit Linux for machines really short on memory. I also need to add earlyoom. Yes the these service may use a little bit of resources themselves, but it’s not about the bragging rights of how little ram is used. The services will make better use of the memory. zram is like the old joke of just download more ram 🙂 and earlyoom keeps the system from crashing when it’s low on memory. So it’s a win/win

*Edited for clarity. Add the word “usage”. Noted above with a *

I used to know of an icon theme that would match your background. Now I can find only buuf : https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1012233
