From one day to the next! Yesterday it worked; today it refuses to launch.
sudo apt update
Hit:1 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster InRelease
Hit:2 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-backports InRelease
Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree… Done
Reading state information… Done
All packages are up to datesudo apt upgrade just told me to use autoremove to nuke some old stuff.
Can’t figure out what happened! Java issue maybe?

::I just saw and read your post – after I DLed the .deb package from the Libreoffice site. Got it going again, but it’s not showing up in the menus. I just added Libreoffice7.2 to my Personal menu.
Anyway here’s the output you asked for:
apt policy libreoffice-writer
libreoffice-writer:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 1:6.1.5-3+deb10u7
Version table:
1:7.0.4~rc2-1~bpo10+2 100
100 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-backports/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
1:6.1.5-3+deb10u7 500
500 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster/main amd64 PackagesDoes it give a clue as to what I need to do to prevent this from happening again?
Thanks ….--

::After installing libreoffice from the official website it is no longer divided in various packages, and probably has replaced the old installation, so the command will only say that the writer package is not installed (the command is no longer useful for troubleshooting).
After installing the .deb from the official site (probably installed with gdebi, which doesn’t update the menus), you can update the menus with
sudo desktop-menu --write-out-global
See if it works.antiX Live system enthusiast.

::If Libreoffice downloaded from LO org is installed using dpkg as described/recommended by LO
org the menus do get updated but the packages can be non shown.
Using the maintenance tab menu manager I have had to set to show the entrys on two occasions
recently after installation. You can still see the installed packages separately in Synaptic.
If you have an older version you do not wish to keep purge then clean with apt-autoremove. Also applies if moving to a distro supplied package. before installing an updated version
There is now a backport package in debian experimental but I tend to pull the LO Org package
immediately after release as easy to install and generaly works fine.A Java Run time is neccesary for example, to use Language tool extension, I have found the
open java not to work. Needed the oracle version and copied in to /usr/share/java.
Pointed LO to that (options extended in writer) and the language tool installed and works correctly. Open java was insufficient.- This reply was modified 1 year, 7 months ago by ModdIt.

::It didn’t choke completely – it just showed me a “usage” screen; looking for an extra parameter I suppose. Can’t tell which one to use to update the menus.

Yes! They did show up right away!
