LibreOffice Writer bug – crashes when leaving full screen print preview

I’ve got a bug happening, in Libre Office Writer. I’m not sure how long this bug has existed, because there was a long stretch of time when I didn’t use the full screen mode of print preview. But, I’ve been using it again now, and there’s a serious BUG in it.

The problem is that the LO Writer program is incapable of exiting full screen mode of print preview without crashing. This has been a nuisance, forcing me to re-open whatever document file I was working with – but last night it was an extra step worse. You see, I use VeraCrypt for data storage on an external drive – and when I wanted to dismount the partition, it couldn’t do it. It claimed there was still a file open, although there was nothing showing in the task bar. Finally, I just backed up the partition which wouldn’t dismount, and then shut down the machine without finishing proper dismount first. Starting up today, I discovered that LOW wanted to recover the file which had crashed last night. I let it do so, then closed the file properly.

I went to the LO website, and discovered that the current stable version is v7.3.6. By contrast, the version being served from the repo is v7.0.4.2. I’d considered filing a bug report w/ LO, but discovering that the repo version was so far behind, I concluded they’d probably just tell me to upgrade to the current version before complaining about a bug.

One possible solution to my problem, would be to uninstall the repo version, then download & install the current stable version from the website in its place. That might fix the problem… But,I’m cautious of doing that, thinking that perhaps the repo version has been tweaked in some manner to fit antiX – and perhaps losing those tweaks could cause new problems.

Another possible solution, given that the current installation is antiX v19.4, would be for me to set up an antiX v21 installation using some of the unused space on this machine’s internal HD. (It’s got enough empty space for 2 or 3 such installations…) But, that would be a pain in the you-know-what, going through the rigamarole & shennanigans of setting up another new OS. It seems like it would be much easier, to simply fix the issue that’s going wrong.

So, I’m seeking advice here in the forum, re. what’s the best course of action for me to solve this problem. Thanks in advance, for any helpful comments.

All libreoffice versions on antiX come from Debian repos and as far as we know they have not been ‘tweaked’.
Since you are using the old stable version of antiX (and Debian), the only way to get an ‘up to date version’ is to either install directly debs from libreoffice or use an appimage (if available).

I never ran in to that bug but it was around for a long time.
My suspicion is that the problem may be java related.

You could use the Buster Backported LO libreoffice (1:7.0.4-4+deb11u3~bpo10+1)
It is probably fixed. If you use java please do get Oracle jave and set it up.
Just copy in to opt then point lo to the package. You can find details in older
Forum posts.

Or as anticapitalista suggested remove repo version of LO.
Instructions are in LO Wiki.

Download new package and Language pack or packs from LO Org.
Unpack.

Enter sudo apt install in the terminal then using rox filer (or your choice)
mark drag and drop the LO .deb packages in to the terminal. Tap enter for
installation.

Only disadvantage is you will not get automatic updates.
