@Eism* – I’ve been using LibreWolf on and off for quite some time- I’ve not yet encontered a web site that it could not render.
Also, like Firefox, it also has a very nice full screen mode, great, for netbooks with tiny screens…

If you are interested in a script to keep LibreWolf AppImage up-to-date, I wrote a little script for this need (as it is my main browser) and shared it on MX forum :

        https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=665637#p665637

I added this script in my “up” alias (up = apt update && apt list –upgradable && sudo apt full-upgrade && LWupdater). Seems to work well as far as I am concerned !

        Thank you very much!
        Muito obrigado!

It´s funny Librewolf works fine in antiX 21 as AppImage, but does not work in mx latest, so there I had to install it as a flatpak.

              Hello @anamesa,

I currently use Librewolf AppImage under MX21 (Fluxbox) as my main home browser. So it is able to work ! I did not tweak anything (yet I use it through firejail, with firejail –appimage –profile=librewolf –somemoreoptions /path/to/LW.AppImage). You could of course use flatpak if you prefer, but a little testing seems useful about AppImage. Do you have other running AppImage in the same directory ? Have you checked for the execution permission ? Is it on a mounted partition with “nouser” or “noexec” mounting option ?

                Hello @Girafenaine,

                Thank you for your reply.
Though I’ve read a bit about firejail, I’m not using it, as I probably should, I’ve postponed this to the future 🙂
But If one just tries to open the Librewolf AppImage by executing it (having of course rendered it executable), then it doesn’t open in mx. I think the AppImage concept is to be able to work by just executing. If one has to apply specific settings etc, then it has lost a fraction of its purpose and usefulness. I may follow your suggestion, because flatpaks are very large in size, but first I have to read more about firejail. I have to admit that I don’t like using flapaks, due to their size mostly.

As to your other questions, I indeed have a couple of AppImages in the same directory, Joplin is one of them. I have checked for the executing permission (chmod +x). And the appimages are in a directory inside my home directory, so they should work, anyway Joplin works fine. But the AppImage is (was) on my laptop, currently not where I’m now, so I’m going to check the permissions for the AppImage, just in case…

                  Hello @anamesa,

I should have been clearer : incidentally I use firejail and it works, but I don’t have to use firejail for LW AppImage to work. I can launch it as every other AppImage by just executing it, once execution permission is set. That’s why I think you should investigate to understand why it does not work on your MX21.

Perhaps wrong architecture, as the AppImage exists for “x86-64” and “aarch64” ?
Or just try to download it again here : https://gitlab.com/librewolf-community/browser/appimage/-/releases

                  Cheers

                      Hello Girafenaine.
                      It΄s a late reply, but nevertheless…
In antix and mx (and probably debian based distros), appimages cannot be run when not in local drive, that is in local partition. This is (or was) not true for other distros, for instance manjaro and other arch based distros. The answer to this was the output of bash in commandline. When I transferred the appimage of librewolf in my home directory, then all run smoothly. I had it in another partition, and used a symlink, to save space.I prefer appimages to flatpaks, cause flatpaks are big, and install other freedesktop.org depencencies in addition. More to it, one has to install flatseal to give permissions, in order to be able to work in other directories than home with flatpaks, at least this was the case with ungoogled-chromium flatpak. Since I΄ve not found any appimage for ungoogled-chromium or jdownloader, I use the corresponding flatpaks.

I once again have to thank you for your helpful interventions and replies on the subject.

                        Hi anamesa girafenaine,
I use LibreWolf daily due to its excellent website acceptability, it is somewhat better
than Ungoogled Chromium in that respect.

athttps://librewolf.net/installation/debian/ there are instructions for adding the repo and installing a deb.
Have been using that method on antiX full for weeks now without issues, that experience applies to both runit and
sysv versions and over 3 devices.
The advantage is you will be updating using the antiX updater, apt or synaptic depending on preference.
Not sure on the actual appimage, earlier versions could be renamed adding .zip, unpacked and contents moved to opt, just
I originally unpacked to take a look at what I would be using on my system and found a familiar setup, similar to Firefox as downloaded from Mozilla, no unexpected or unexplained extras.

Thank you for sharing this information, including the latest update.

Firefox 98 is releasing on Tuesday; the Beta repo already has the image available; this may allow LibreWolf to release an update soon too!

In any case, it’s good to have multiple alternatives available for various privacy and security concerns; appreciate the update!

                              Hello antiX fellows,

It’s good that LibreWolf is now easier to install and update with a repo. I find it a good browser. Even if ungoogled-chromium is an interesting idea, it still depends on development effort from Google engineers. I want not to depend from such efforts. Librewolf is Firefox with privacy minded configuration and fits my needs and hopes. The Librewolf team has interesting ideas and is dedicated to the project.

I am now used to the AppImage. Together with firejail, AppImage lets me have a “sandboxed” app which I find useful for a browser. A browser is a special app, able to run some random javascript, and open to the wild wild net. I like to run my browser in a sandbox in order to protect the computer, system and data on it. The only drawback with AppImage is the updating, but as I wrote in this thread I use a little script to automatical updates so that’s all fine. Thanks to firejail, you can configure a sandbox and even use a network sandbox (own network stack just for the app, with no ability to see or change what is going on your other connections). And I use a VPN in this sandbox… so quite a strong protection for classical privacy and security threats.

@anamesa : about your “strange” issue with AppImages not being run outside your main partition, I guess it’s about the way other partitions are mounted on your filesystems. You can check in /etc/fstab the options used to mount partitions. You need to add “exec” options in order to be able to run programs from a partition (actually it depends on other options. For instance “user” option makes “noexec” be a default option, and you have to add “exec”).
