      The part of interest to me is the idea of a top or bottom of the screen horizontal conky whose purpose would be keep the important stuff on the top of the screen unless specifically overriden…

          Yes, thanks. I can’t find a memory efficient way to monitor for root file system space (running from small SSD), and have come to the conclusion that conky uses less memory than any tray icon I have found to do that task. This is certainly a good possible option.

            Originally I had all Conkys with the configuration files
            is provided. But it got the “Forbidden error” of the forum when sending it.
            I am already old and forgot what trick there is to bypass this “Forbidden”. Maybe it knows caprea… 😉

            so you mean a conky that shows you “df -h” from /?
            Do I have to search through my collection, somewhere you can find that, too.
            Where do you want it, up, down, left, right? What is the resolution of your display?
