Thanks for the post to this interesting interview masinick,

Linus is a very humble and simple man with focused personal motives. It is a
great thing that others look at his work and feed back to him but also build
on it and share to others. I can relate to not being a people person in person.

p.s. can the post from wallpapers by marcelocripe be moved here as it’s off
topic there please.

linuxdaddy, my other post, was really off topic, I’m sorry, it wasn’t my intention. If any forum administrator can help by correcting what I did, please feel free.

I share another link from a documentary that helped me a lot to understand a little more about what this “world of Linux distributions” is, before watching it I mistakenly called it “Linux world”. The documentary is about GNU / Linux from 2001 that deals with the history of the 20 years of GNU, Linux, Open Source, and the Free Software movement.

Compartilho outro link de um documentário que me ajudou muito a compreender um pouco mais do que é este “mundo das distribuições Linux”, antes de assistir eu o chamava erroneamente de “mundo Linux”. O documentário é sobre GNU/Linux de 2001 que trata da história dos 20 anos da GNU, Linux, Open Source, e do movimento Software Livre, está Legendado em Português do Brasil, possui 1h25min, é longo, mas vale a pena assistir.

The growth and maturity of Linus Torvalds is evident in the interview. The changes are significant because his previous style created some significant conflicts and a hostility for a while.

As Linus explains, he’s really not very good at communicating with other people, but the interview actually shows that he is extremely grateful for the people who have shared ideas, filling in the roles that he doesn’t handle well, and that he has gained a lot of appreciation for all of the countless hours and ideas that make Linux what it is today.

I’ve moved the other comment;. I’ll graft it in here when I get on my computer so I can get it done right.

Eu testei um pouco do vídeo da entrevista do sr. Linus Torvalds que o senhor nos trouxe no através do tópico do link: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/linus-torvalds-interview/, a legenda de tradução do Youtube/Google parece que consegue acompanhar e funcionar bem, eles não falam muito rápido, o que ajuda o tradutor. Vou assistir assim que possível.

I just listened to a few minutes of this conversation It’s actually useful and relevant, because going back many years, there was a major philosophical difference between the “Free Software Foundation” (FSF), creators of GNU, and those who wanted a practical name to describe software that can be free, either in cost or redistribution, but can also be distributed commercially.

Ironically enough, Richard Stallman himself has actually sold his “Free” software so this is primarily a semantic argument.

These days, with the exception of the Free Software Foundation, more people, Linus Torvalds included, typically refer to the software used by Linux and other freely available works as “Open Source Software” rather that “free” anything; the exception to this, of course, are any efforts that agree with Richard Stallman. The reference referred to by marcelocripe is the one that explains this difference and Eric Raymond, along with others, give us the background behind those differences.

The entire discussion is at least as long as the one with Linus Torvalds, possibly even longer, so save it for when you have the time, or come back a few times to listen if you are interested. It does really clarify a lot of the history, seemingly small differences that are really important to some, while just “arguing points” to others.
