I found this reply in reddit and I liked it so much I wanted to share it here:

Think of Linux as a small country. The electrical outlets in Linuxland are different from those in the Apple Kingdom or the United States of Windows, so your household appliances and gadgets won’t work the way you’re used to. Sure, you can fiddle with adapters to make things work somehow, but eventually it’s easier to settle for the solutions that are native to Linuxland. Depending on your use case, these solutions can work for you or they don’t. But then again, it’s your conscious choice to move here, and your motivation should not be to have everything the way you’re used to – for that you could have stayed in the Apple Kingdom or the United States of Windows if you were happy there.
Linuxland is a nation of immigrants, a home of choice, not of birth. Most people took refuge here because they felt estranged from the place they were born in. Some didn’t like the walls built around the Apple Kingdom and came here in search of more freedom. Some felt unsafe in the United States of Windows with its high crime rate. Some resented the surveillance state and the poor civil liberties situation present in both nations that made them flee here.
So you’ll have to check your motivation for coming (the intimidating neckbeards routinely gatekeeping our borders will ask you for it, but you needn’t answer; it’s a personal choice ;). If you like, you can just pay us a short visit and see if Linuxland is for you; our Live USB sessions have made tourism very comfortable. If you choose to stay, then, yes, you will probably need to get accustomed to a new culture, learn the language and different ways of doing things. But typically, for those that choose to stay, the time and energy required to learn new ways outweighs the pain of staying where they no longer felt free, safe or at home.
The only thing missing here is that to mention that in Linuxland many things considered broken, old or unusable can have a longer life here.

::Fortunately, in a world that is increasingly dependent on so “web apps”, we, at antiXia district in Linuxland, need to use less and less adapters to our “electric outlets”-
Who would know, some years ago, that we would be running, in antiX stuff like MS Office, Netflix, etc? If it has a web page, we can (probably) run it 🙂
We hang on to our old gadgets like a dog to a bone- if it’s still ticking, we keep using it…
Meanwhile, in the real world, some young twenty something years old kid stares at me saying, over an Apple laptop with a touchscreen instead of function keys: “Wait a minute, did you say that your laptop is almost as old as me?”P.

::In this part of the global village of antiXia
My daughter twenty plus stares at me, did you say that the desktop computer I am using for university is more than half as old as me?”
Our Desktop devices, Laptop, Netbook are all more than 12 Years old, not all components in them, SSD fitted and DVD writer in two desktops
recently replaced. EEPC and T420 also fitted with SSD. Had to Fix a PSU some months ago. Replaced a couple of capacitors. My monitor,
is getting noisy again so maybe that power supply is either running too hot or the special low ESR caps fitted about a year ago need to be
increased in size.I moved my daughter to antiX21 just over a week ago, she is fine with the change and VERY impressed with the improved performance over MX.
Her PC is a small form binsave from a doctors surgery, Core 2 Duo, Upgraded to 2 GB RAM. Lubricated the cooling fan a week ago.
Sleeve bearings dry out over time CPU Throttling and GE90 at Max Take off power simulation fixed. With a little attention The device is hopefully
good for many more years.November 19, 2021 at 9:14 pm #71247Forum Admin

::Love the simile(s)!
You know, on the one hand, I think everybody should have equal access to all modern computers, laptops, tablets wherever they are in the world (also without cost), but the paradox is that it would make half of the raison d’être of antiX no longer useful.
That’s why we insist on the other half – (and this is related to the title of the thread) – the ‘political’ aspect of welcoming and encouraging cooperation and thinking from all regardless of nationality, gender, sexuality, religion or any other socially constructed boundaries.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

::@anticapitalista “That’s why we insist on the other half”
That’s almost the same philosophy as Ubuntu (at the beginning).
FI: Ubuntu (Zulu pronunciation: [ùɓúntʼù]) is a Nguni Bantu term meaning “humanity”. It is sometimes translated as “I am because we are” .And yes, antiX is not anti-social (it is adapted for new machines, and also for old machines).

::Don’t forget the fantastic antiX live system. It is the main reason I arrived here in the first place.
I concur with Xecure on this. The main strength of antiX is Live/Frugal/LiveSataInternal capability, which is far superior to any other out there, which in combination with small memory footprint is alone a reason d’etre in itself. None other comes close. When the world realizes the power of antiX Live, none other mode makes much sense except for the most old and underpowered hardware.

::You can’t just find any “Think of Linux as a small country”, you have to find the right GNU/Linux distribution or community, where newbies are accepted, where people are respected, where people come together to teach each other, where people get support and help, where people come together for the common good, this we find here.
I know it’s hard to find the distribution with the right GNU/Linux community, it took me a long time to get here.A newcomer in the world of GNU/Linux distributions when he arrives here, usually arrives lost and without direction, when there is another human being or several human beings that can guide and orient the other human being that is lost, the migration between the nations of operating systems becomes much easier less immigrant.
I thank you all for this community and for antiX Linux.

::Well, from the day using antiX onwards people seeing it working can’t believe this is a 20 years old 32bit notebook only. They do presume it must be a recent hardware, since they are used to see things slowed down drastically by modern Operating Systems on old machines.
My thesis is: We face kind of cartel here. Hardware and Software industries stick together under one cloak. They need each other and create artificially needs for each other. Think yourself:
1.) Capitalism needs growth at any cost. It simply can’t exist without. But as we know, there are limits to growth.
2.) The problem the companies are facing nowadays is: Everything people really needs to live is — in modern western civilisations at least — present already. No, not present only, people are filled up to the brim with new and even newer gadgets. So how can they increase their output in terms of money in spite of this fact? They have to raise artificially an additional need. Until some years ago they did this by creating a hype only. But this isn’t enough anymore. People are getting tired of following hype after hype. So what else could they do?
3.) Easy is the answer: Make people dependent on buying new hardware. The hardware manufacturers can’t do this on their own, as long people see their PCs do work fine and fast still, they probably won’t buy a new one. So they need the help of the software manufacturers, tailoring the software in a way old machines will get outmatched by firstly dropping support for drivers needed and secondly by removing optimised code for the older systems from their software, rendering these machines extremely slow all of a sudden. What is the benefit for the software industry itself? Well, to make it short: They depend also on the hardware industry producing the new systems in a way incompatible to the older machines, so they also can sell constantly newest software, telling (lying at) people it wouldn’t work anymore otherwise.Once you have understood this mechanism, you’ll probably think twice before buying something new in hardware sector. You get misused as a cash cow only.
To support this capitalistic construct, legislation in European countries has set up laws not allowing to directly recycle well functioning electronic devices anymore once they are at local recycling facility, which are set up to destroy the devices and only get back the raw materials, sweeping the market of used hardware. This process is energy intensive, and needs expensive high tech. Good for big hardware industries, bad for small local repair services business. It should really get used only for devices which are not reparable anymore. But they shred even brand new devices, never used… What a wasting. Try it yourself. Go and ask your local official recycling service whether they could sell you a used spare part you need from one of the devices they shred. They’ll tell you (if you ask pertinaciously) “yes, we have this specific part here indeed you would urgently need, not one, but many of them, BUT it is strictly forbidden by law to sell it to you. If you can’t get it elsewhere anymore, bring us your device also, we’ll shred it.” That’s the logic of modern economics.
antiX is what I call a stronghold against these practices. It allows us to use our hardware as long as it will work and is reparable.
You doubt my words about the methods of modern economics? Think of German “Abwrackprämie“, the stop of terrestrial analog TV transmissions (and short term switch of standards in digital terrestrial transmission since then), the planned dismiss of UKW radio band rendering millions and millions upon millions of radio receivers useless. This is not what they pretend it was: good for saving nature. No, its squandering natural resources and energy simply.
Yes, there are legal reasons for which you could need a very highend and fast brand new equipment: In case you have special needs, e.g. like rendering virtual 3D-realities and drawings, a process taking weeks on older hardware. But there is no real reason for average citizen to buy new equipment every few months. Wake up and notice they try to make you addicted to this kind of stuff, turning you into a junkie.
So antiX is a thorn in their side. Once people have understood they don’t really need all these artificially generated increased requirements. It might get ugly. It’s all about making money only, and they can’t take a joke when it comes to that.
Yes, antiX means rebellion against this kind of despoliation and plundering of natural resources and people.
And it helps giving people in other countries not that rich the means of participating in digital revolution. antiX is not only good, fast, and cheap but also efficient in terms of resource usage.

::Robin, you have raised several extremely important issues.
It’s a shame that with each stable Debian release change, several technologies are left behind, consequently impacting antiX, for being based on Debian. I may have arrived late in the GNU/Linux world, but with a little research it is possible to become aware of the history that is available for those who want to know it and get to know what happened until we got where we are.
The Digital Television was imposed to us in Brazil “throats down”, it’s sad to see TV sets thrown to the corners and discarded in an irregular way. Someone may ask “but there are no laws in Brazil”? Laws exist, there are several, including the law that taxes electric power generated from the sun (it seems absurd, but it’s true…), the question is “who checks if the laws are being followed or not”. When the analog signal was removed, there were better TV sets than I have and much newer ones dumped on street corners or in places of irregular disposal of rubbish and debris. It’s not uncommon to see TV sets on street corners. And the digital signal converters for analog TV cost and still cost more than a used analog TV, something like R$ 200.00 (U$ 35.79 for the quotation of 22-11-2021) for a digital signal converter for analog TV and a tube TV used for R$ 100.00 (U$ 17.90 for the quotation of 22-11-2021).
The report above is about irregular disposal, shows an example in the city of Ribeirao Preto in the state of Sao Paulo, but it is not a local problem or unique to this city, the problem occurs in all corners of Brazil, is a reflection of government actions when they are made without a responsible long-term management of what to do and how to do the process “down the throat” of the mandatory exchange of technology. No poor family was consulted if they would want to change their television set in a compulsory way. In the image, in the background, it is possible to see the burnt wall of the fire, it demonstrates what is done with the irregular disposal of rubbish and rubbish, it is disappointing to see this…
The report above about the irregular disposal, shows an example of the cities of São Carlos and Araraquara, both in the state of São Paulo, the images of the report are softer, but the image just below has a collection of TV sets in excellent condition that simply went to waste. How can we explain this to the next generations? Certainly they will ask: “did you do nothing to avoid waste?”, “were you not aware of the impact and contamination of the environment, besides bringing irreversible diseases to people?”, “did your generation do nothing to prevent the irregular disposal of rubbish and rubbish?”, “did your generation accept the programmed obsolescence of technology?
The report above about is about irregular disposal, it shows an example in the city of Campinas in the state of São Paulo, who sees the images thinks that people here are all rich, what is not true, this is unacceptable … The monitors and televisions discarded in the images of the report are better than the ones I use or the ones used by other people I know and that have in their homes.

On this site you have a gigantic list about the heavy metals present in televisions and monitors.
Every day we get closer and closer to the reality presented in the 2008 American animation entitled “WALL-E”.
We may even live in the “information age”, but only those who want to obtain information seek “information” and this will not be a justification to explain it to future generations.
