I used Live-usb Maker and created a live-usb of antiX-17.1_386-core.iso (32-bit). I booted into it with static persistence.
I have watched dolphin_oracle’s “Setup up your Desktop Environment!” video.
On this video, d_o runs as root this command:
apt-get install xserver-xorg x11-xserver-utils xfonts-base x11-utils lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter xfce4 xfce4-goodiesThen he reboots into the Desktop Environment.
I don’t want to install xfce4, but icewm. I don’t know which packages are needed. After updating, I tried this:
apt-get install xserver-xorg x11-xserver-utils xfonts-base x11-utils slim xauth scrot icewm desktop-defaults-icewm-antixSlim gave this error:
Setting up slim (1.3.6.9+nmu1) ... [....] Reloading system message bus config... Failed to open connection to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory invoke-rc.d: initscript dbus, action "reload" failedNo GUI after reboot. I tried:
$ icewm icewm: Can't open display: <none>. X must be running and $DISPLAY set. $ startx -bash: startx: command not foundI decided to try with xfce4, as d_o did. I installed lightdm (lightdm-gtk-greeter was also installed automatically) xfce4, xfce4-goodies. Lightdm gave the same error as slim:
Failed to open connection to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory invoke-rc.d: initscript dbus, action "reload" failedThe newest version of dbus appears to be already installed. But there was not a dbus folder in /var/run. I created myself a /var/run/dbus/ folder and a /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket file, but I suppose it doesn’t help.

::Thank you. That’s it, about dbus. I deleted the “disable=lxd” and booted into a fresh-created live-usb. I installed the packages shown on video (xserver-xorg x11-xserver-utils xfonts-base x11-utils lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter xfce4 xfce4-goodies) and lightdm didn’t give any errors. But still I can’t reboot into the Desktop environment.

::Install dbus-x11
Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::It appears to be already installed.
dbus-x11 is already the newest version (1.10.26-0+deb9u1.0nosystemd1). dbus-x11 set to manually installed.March 22, 2018 at 10:26 am #8138Anonymous
::i would:
apt-get remove dbus-x11
apt-get install dbus-x11If the above doesn’t fix, and no error messages shown during the “install” operation, try this:
dpkg –configure -aMarch 22, 2018 at 10:56 am #8145Forum Admin

::How about
apt-get install xserver-xorg-legacyBTW startx no longer works without this change.

::Removing dbus-x11 also removed xfce4-goodies.
No error messages during re-installing dbus-x11, but it didn’t fix the problem.
I also re-installed xfce4-goodies, but still no GUI.# dpkg --configure -a dpkg: error processing package a (--configure): no package named 'a' is installed, cannot configure Errors were encountered while processing: aI’ll try with xserver-xorg-legacy.

::I installed xserver-xorg-legacy and rebooted, but still:
# startx -bash: startx: command not foundI also added to Xwrapper.config file this line:
needs_root_rights=yesThe problem remains.

::Hey, lookit: a clue !
startx: command not foundThe startx command is provided by package “xinit”.
March 23, 2018 at 1:25 am #8189Memberandfree
::Thanks, that’s it. I installed xinit, and “startx” works now. But, I have to find out how to boot into gui automatically.
March 23, 2018 at 2:20 am #8190Anonymous
::how to boot into gui automaticallyAs I understand it, installation of “slim” or other login manager package will place a file in /etc/init.d (e.g. /etc/init.d/slim).
The file provides instruction to init, stating “this should be autostarted for runlevel 5”. That gets ya “automagically booted into gui” (the slim login screen).For “automatic login”, can hand edit /stc/slim.conf and specify “auto_login yes” (and “default_user suchandsuch”)…
or use the antiX ControlCenter tool which provides a GUI to accomplish this autologin setup.
(or can launch that GUI tool directly from the commandline via sudo slim-login )===========
anklebone connected to the shinbone, shinbone connected to the kneebone…
Within /etc/slim.conf is a specified “login_cmd” commandstring which is executed upon successful login.
In antiX, it is “/usr/local/bin/desktop-session %sessionname”
By examining the content of the desktop-session script, you can continue following
the chain of “whatall autostarts whatelse within a given desktop session”.DISCLAIMER: corrections welcomed ~~ I’m not 100% confident the details of this post are entirely accurate

::Have you removed the 3 in the grub menu?

::It was not autologin I cared about. After having thought it better, I also don’t care about getting into a login manager’s screen anymore. I prefer starting X manually. What I want is to use icewm instead of xfce. I purged xfce4, xfce4-goodies, lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter. I ran “apt autoremove” and I installed icewm. But still, after rebooting, “startx” gets me into the xfce environment.
I don’t delete “3” in the boot options.March 23, 2018 at 8:48 pm #8212Anonymous

A good start toward figuring out whatall remnants didn’t get autoremoved:
sudo updatedb
locate xfce
locate xfdesk
locate xfconf -
