Hello. I’m using an up-to-date Lenovo Ideacentre and would only like a live DVD session from the magazine to work. I believe it is version 21.
I changed the boot order by pressing F12 and the antiX21 menu appeared. Good sign.
I changed the keyboard layout to UK. The DVD drive was making noises 🙂
When I hit enter on the antiX top option (I assume this would run the OS), I received an error, then “press any key…”
To see if things were working right I ran the RAM Check program, waited 8.0 seconds for it to run… And hit a blank screen.
I rebooted my machine back into Windows successfully. No harm done.
Anyone have some experience that can help? Maybe F6(?) to try another desktop environment? I’m in a coffee shop right now so forgot the error.
Thanks.

::Love to help, but we need more info.
Perhaps retry the DVD, and write down the error message for us. 🙂

::There should be a safe mode option a few down in the list. Maybe give that a try….
As christophe states, the error message would be helpful to figure it out.Computers are like air conditioners. They work fine until you start opening Windows. ~Author Unknown

::Maybe worth thinking about downloading an ISO, checking the sha256 sum then putting it on a USB stick.
Unfortunately magazine DVD are not always usable/defective when they reach the customer.February 24, 2022 at 5:57 pm #78056Memberthenewkgb
::Thanks for your responses.
I’d give you more information, bit sadly the DVD won’t even boot any more. Ever ran into troubles when code works once the first time, but never again after? 🙂
The only thing I could think of that’s wrong is seeing an error message not saving the settings in the F12 menu. When I Save and Exit, it says setting cannot be saved (the full message can’t be seen, overflowing the GUI window).
I don’t even know if this is the BIOS screen I’m in.
So a little more investigation my end.

::I’m happy to see that Linux Magazine thinks enough of our distribution to offer it and write about it in their publication, though I have not personally read this particular piece. I have, however, purchased their magazines more than once and they are typically of good quality, and their ISO images have usually worked in the past for me. Sorry that has not been the case in all situations.
For those who ARE able to download our images themselves, we have multiple versions (each suited to particular “use cases”) and they are all high quality work with a good degree of participation, and our own user community has done a lot to improve the language translations so that our efforts can be used in many different “native languages”. I thank everyone who has been a part of those efforts, and if anyone has any suggestions or offers of assistance in the matter under discussion, we appreciate it too; many thanks!

::The Magazine short article comments regarding the DVD offer are very sensible and positive toward antiX.
https://www.linux-magazine.com/Issues/2022/256/This-Month-s-DVDIn the news section there is also an article on release of AV Linux which is now based on MX21.
The antiX MX family is growing, many thanks and congratulations to anticapitalista as well as all
MX antiX and AV linux devs for all the hard work leading up to the new member distribution.
Only caveat for users of older hardware, AV Linux no longer supports 32-bit.February 24, 2022 at 9:34 pm #78082MemberModdIt
::Regarding the problems with the DVD, sounds like a hardware problem, either dvd or drive.
If you are able you would be much better off running antiX from a usb stick, that allows
testing and using many features as well as saving or transferring data in a way a read only
device like DVD can never do.After major changes you can do a personal remaster of your stick to keep all your changes in
an optimised fast booting format. Using Persistence options is very useful but is somewhat
less performant due read write compression decompression load on the system.February 25, 2022 at 9:48 am #78090Forum Admin

::Might try a lens cleaner on the dvd drive since you said noisy. 3m makes em .
They have bailed me out before in the past before I upgraded my brain to boot from usb. Even on bios that does not support usb boot.

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problemsFebruary 28, 2022 at 7:50 pm #78201Memberseaken64
::You said up-to-date Lenovo IdeaCentre. Does that mean a desktop? My IdeaPads do not even have an optical drive. You must have a few USB ports right? Do you have broadband internet connection? Can you download the antiX iso from the internet? That will be better than the DVD.
But, if all you have is the DVD then you may be able to get it to boot by going into BIOS settings and set the optical drive as the first boot device.
But it sounds to me like you need help from a technician if you do not know what screen you are on. F12 is usually a BIOS key. If it is a key to “Save” to the DVD drive it will not work – unless your system is set to write to a DVD-RAM. This is an advantage of using a USB key drive.
Do you have a techy friend?
