Hi all,
I have a newish computer with two GPUs: an integrated Intel one (UHD630) and a discreet Nvidia card (GTX1050). Last year, several different iso’s ran fine in VirtualBox on this computer.
In my current tests I am using a live usb with Antix 19 full iso. This boots ONLY to a command line, although boot messages indicate that the boot is running at level 5.
On another computer with just one graphics card, the same usb boots to a graphical screen in a “normal” fashion.
I suspect the problem is caused by this computer having two GPUs, but I haven’t seen any reports of this or how to tell the boot which GPU to ignore. I have tried adding “nomodeset i915.modeset=1” before the splash term with no apparent effect.
Appreciate advice and suggestions.
Thanks.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::hi anticapitalista,
UPDATE: The 4.19 kernel booted to a full GRAPHIC desktop.
Thanks.
So, why did that work?

(initial response before trying the 4.19 kernel version.)thanks for suggestion. I will try it.
I am curious – does a video card get selected before the liveusb starts running? if so, do we need to add the linux driver for that video card in order to run a graphic display? if so, then we would start with a command line and then add the missing driver to the usb (with persistence) and then either reboot or use startx or equivalent to boot X?

Driver related. As you know, linux has all driver control in the kernel. It is an advantage and a disadvantage.
Older kernels will not be compatible with new hardware, while newer kernels will not be compatible with very old hardware. And this is not windows, you cannot easily install drivers. If your kernel does not contain the driver you need, you can either compile this driver for the exact kernel you are using or update the kernel to different one that does already contain the specific driver (fro newer devices, a newer kernel).antiX wants to give life back to old computers, so it uses a relatively “old” kernel with the newest security updates to be compatible and safe for as many devices as it can. Newer devices will have trouble with the antiX default kernel, and require a newer kernel. anticapitalista has taken the time to create alternative ISOs for antiX 19 that contain a newer 4.19 kernel for people having trouble running antiX on newer computers. We surely appreciate this effort, as it has solved many problems like the one you had.
So there you have it. I hope this helps understand the troubles with linux systems having drivers tied to the kernel.

::Hi Xecure,
Thanks for the response. That is helpful. I guess that the driver for the graphics card selected by efi is in 4.19 but not in the 4.9 kernel.
