It’s supposed to automatically boot to IceWM right? I get stopped at the console and have to log in (root:root) and then I can’t figure out how to start X– or if it’s possible at all. The text mode seemed to otherwise function normally. It was actually a several days ago that I tried, but I figured I should at least ask what is normal behavior before I have another go at it. (hopefully tomorrow night)

tried 19.0 and 19.1.. same results. This is a different system than I was previously using 17 and 16. I don’t currently have it available to compare results.

I suspect maybe the video card isn’t supported “out of the box”?? (NVIDIA GTX 1050)

Using MX liveusb instead. It’s fine but I’d rather be using antiX.

Long story, short– I trashed my many years old frankenlinux the other day while goofing with the graphics drivers and stupidly got rid of too much before I realized I was having trouble with antiX and MX.

Neither will let me reuse my crusty old home partition– I have read indications that this is a weak area of the installer or perhaps some sort of bug, but I haven’t really investigated it very far. I am just booting the live system every day and gradually going thru 2 years worth of poorly organized junk so I can decide what’s worthy of backing up.

It’s not urgent, but any pointers would be appreciated.

Bonus Computer Dad Points if you can tell me why the installer(s) won’t let me reuse my home partition. I’ve been reusing it for years without trouble across several distributions.. I rename the old user directories to keep things somewhat organized and use different user names for different installs when I was doing that. I don’t get why it’s suddenly a problem for MX and antiX. I was less adventurous with the antiX (cli) installer but the MX installer definitely said it couldn’t reuse the home partition.

I would try booting the antiX live on another system, installing a newer kernel, remaster, and use live-kernel-updater to change the live systems boot kernel.

the difference may well be the nouveau drivers in the antiX 4.9 kernel vs. the ones in the 4.19 kernel that MX ships with.

I would need to see the /var/log/minstall.log for the installer questions.
