I’m fairly new to Linux but Antix 17 was what got me going after trying, failing and eventually giving up with many other distros.
Now I upgraded to 21 and can’t login.
First, after updating, my sudo got corrupted. I could no longer get root access. I googled and found and tried many, many solutions. None worked. Then not being able to apply any commands because no sudo, I rebooted machine.
      Now I can’t login.
      I use ctr + alt + F1
Then I enter username. It says Login Incorrect. Can’t even look under the hood. Tried several online solutions, but no luck.
Is there anyway to fix this?
Thanks and please be gentle, I’m still learning about Linux.

Trying hard to learn Linux to be SysAdmin

Hi, I once corrupted my ‘sudo’, i.e. bad syntax in ‘/etc/sudoers’.

        1) Fix sudo:
My advise is to boot from live USB for antiX/alternate OS, mount the root partition ‘/’ of your antiX system, view the ‘/etc/sudoers’.
I post mine as an example of how it can look.
If the file is messed up, you can create a new one or replace it with my example.
It is a bit older file with custom modifications to run some update/upgrade-related commands without the need to enter password.
Feel free to use/delete them, the former after replacing ‘sybok’ with your username.

        2) More information:
2.A) Since you will have root ‘/’ mounted, please post also the ‘/var/log/apt/history.log’. This might help us to identify where the login issue comes from.
2.B) Also, please post the output of ‘df -h’ (how much free space is available).
There was a login issue due to lack of space.
If this is the case, you may want to follow the suggestion to clear some file (e.g. ‘/tmp/’, ‘.cache’ and some logs in ‘/var/log/’) in

Sorry to say, I expect that any attempt to directly “upgrade” from debian “stretch” -based antiX 17 to debian “bullseye” -based antiX 21 is doomed to fail. Hopefully you created a system snapshot prior to attempting the upgrade and can use the snapshot to restore your system.

          because no sudo

That (missing sudo) is just the tip of the iceberg.
installing “usrmerge” is probably a necessary prerequisite prior to migrating to bullseye

Oh, I did not notice that you upgraded antiX 17 (-> 19) -> 21 while skipping the intermediate version.
This usually works for Fedora that has much closer releases.

Anyway, there are posts related to upgrading antiX 17 and antiX 19 on the forum; they provide a very good guide on the subject.

            Random musings:
            1) If you have a separate ‘/home’ partition and all attempts to fix the issue fail, you may backup ‘/etc/’, list programs installed (e.g. list the binaries in ‘/usr/bin/’ and in other places) and reinstall antiX while preserving ‘/home/’.
            2) If 1) does not apply apart from the failure to fix, you could backup your data (using live USB system and e.g. an external drive) and do a fresh install.

I did not upgrade. I did fresh full installs for each version on different (old) machines.
When I boot up, I get as far as login prompt for username. No matter which of the 3 users I enter, it immediately returns “Login incorrect” –
without even getting to password field. In other words, it’s rejecting username.

So, any of us should be able to easily repeat your steps and end up with the same issue. If it can be repeated, it probably can be debugged and fixed, or at least avoided.

                A few questions:
What exact version of antiX21 did you download and install?
What is your hardware setup? run inxi -Fvr and paste the output here in CODE blocks.
Did you take any non default options when you installed?
What user id did you choose (since it dies at the user id field)?

PS: this doesn’t belong in Tips and Tricks, so I’ll move it to New Users Questions for you

Did you try the procedure Sybok suggested?
also, by any chance where you logged in as “root” when you updated your system? when you installed, did you try to keep the root folder? Maybe some of this info, along with the info provided by the inxi -Fvr command can help solve your problem…

                  P.
