Antix 16.2, up to date as of 2017 10 21.

Cups version in my repositories (listed below) is v1.75, 3 years old, and has been unable to configure my WiFi Printer (Brother HL-L2360DW, bought 2.5 years ago, newer than the installed Cups version). The same printer connected fine with Kubuntu 14.04, so my printer should work today.

I can attempt to install Cups from the Cups website, since it is a tar.gz, but before I hang myself, is my plan going to be a simple task, as in not needing me to manually relocate Cups’s default files and such??

On the other hand, maybe enabling a different repository would help, but which one?

You maybe go better by installing the drivers from the brother page.

        http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll2360dw_us&os=128

They have a driver install tool, which will download the drivers automatically
Follow the instructions on the side that opens with the download

The last post in this thread explains the procedure

        https://askubuntu.com/questions/575500/brother-hl-l2360dw-printer-installation

Edit: The links haven’t been posted, I dont Know why but I can’t get this to work.

            Now all links are shown.
I tried the insert link tool. This didnt work. I could see them, but they were not visible after sending.
I had to copy them from my own post.

You maybe go better by installing the drivers from the brother page.

Tried those drivers with other Debian derived distros, and similar to my current situation, the Brother setup tools don’t give me anything which works.

The last post in this thread explains the procedure

              The first post includes this:

I need help installing my brother Model HL-L2360DW printer using a USB cable.

I want wifi access, since the printer has only been used via wifi. I can ping the printer’s IP address from a console, so it is reachable, but the issue seems to be the Cups system isn’t configuring my OS properly.

First post is not last post. The last describes a wifi installation.

Well, that still failed, as the installer script saw many errors:

dpkg-query: package ‘hll2360dlpr’ is not installed

Use dpkg –info (= dpkg-deb –info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg –contents (= dpkg-deb –contents) to list their contents.

Which is odd, because early in the brprinter-installer script, the output of the script stated:

You are going to install following packages.
                  hll2360dlpr-3.2.0-1.i386.deb
                  hll2360dcupswrapper-3.2.0-1.i386.deb
                  OK? [y/N] ->y

So the error message of the brprinter-installer script shouldn’t happen:

dpkg: error processing archive hll2360dcupswrapper-3.2.0-1a.i386.deb (–install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory

This was a little bit strange, where was your post ???
Saw it the first time today.

Could you please type in terminal
                      system-config-printer

Look if there is already a HLL2360D , if so delete it and close the config-printer

                      Then try again the install-script

Its odd that it doesnt find /home/mmmmna/Documents/CUPS ,which I assume is a folder you created for unzipping the install-tool.
If you didnt make maybe a little mistake, I dont really know whats going on, because I installed the driver for your printer on two antix machines without any error.
But we will see what happens if you delete and try again.

Question:Is the folder you created really named /home/mmmmna/Documents/CUPS , maybe theres a space ? Could be its a problem with the name.

It looks like raw URLs & large blocks of text without code tags are classed as spam by the forum software, this is what I have found so far. 🙂

The process executed very similar to example already posted: tons of errors.
                              No test print.

system-config-printer as root shows the printer listed in the window.

In the window, I opened the properties for the HL-L2360DW, and the listed device URI is file:///dev/null.
So, is that the reason for the lack of function?

It looks like you created a folder named “Cups Again” for doing the install-tool.
It seems like the installer has a problem with the space between Cups and Again.
Could you try it again with a folder named “Cups_Again” or “Cupsagain”
Dont forget to delete your already installed printers in system-config-printer before, not as root.

                                  Ok.

Run system-config-printer as user, deleted all entries for HL-L2360DW.

                                  Renamed “Cups Again” to “Brother”.

I deleted all files in Brother except the driver tar.gz.

I extracted the installer from the archive.

                                  As user:
                                  $ bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1

                                  Response:
Only root can perform this operation.

                                  su, then run again:

                                  root@antix16:/home/mmmmna/Brother# bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1
                                  Input model name ->

                                  and off I went.

The installation concludes with asking me how to connect to the printer:
Will you specify the Device URI? [Y/n] ->

I have no idea of the wifi IP address, as my router isn’t displaying any connected devices, yet this PC itself is a connected device.
I answered Y, but as I just said, I’m not sure where the printer is connected, so in reality, I should have selected No.

The response of the installer script showed 15 items, number 15 seemed to be correct:
                                  15 (A): Auto. (dnssd://Brother%20HL-L2360D%20series._ipp._tcp.local/)

                                  I selected 15.

                                  Got this after entering 15:

                                  lpadmin -p HLL2360D -v dnssd://Brother%20HL-L2360D%20series._ipp._tcp.local/ -E
                                  Test Print? [y/N] ->

Sure, so I entered Y, nothing happened.

                                  Browser, localhost:631
Cups 1.75 loads. Why so old? Version 2.2.5 is what I asked about installing in my first post….

Administration tab, manage printers link, and yes, HL-L2360DW is listed.

                                  As user: =
                                  system-config-printer,

                                  Yes, HL-L2360DW is listed.

The printer properties in system-config-printer shows URI is now dnssd://Brother%20HL-L2360D%20series._ipp._tcp.local/

Click the print test page button, nothing happens.

Back in the localhost, I click the printer queue name for the 2360, it loads a new page where the message says:
                                  "Unable to locate printer "BRW40B89AC92658.local"."

                                  What next?
