Hello!
I installed chrome using the deb file via gdebi and I have hit the refresh menu button I don’t remember how many times, rebooted, yet it doesn’t show up in the menu. I can search it via ‘App Select’.antiX 19.2_full + icewm
Any help and idea about what’s wrong would be appreciated.
Thanks!

::Hi, betman!
Try installing Chrome from the Package installer:
antiX Menu – Control Centre – System tab – “Suit Case” icon – Browser – check “Chrome” – Press “Install” buttonIt should work just fine. You have most of the normal browsers and lots of useful apps there (it’s kind of a small antiX app store)

::Try installing Chrome from the Package installer:
Package installer is a great tool. You can do great stuff such as installing new kernels too. It is interesting though (malfunction?) why gdebi does not work for chrome…

::gdebi does not work to automatically update the menus because gdebi as far as I know uses dpkg directly.
The update menu call is an apt hook in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/. Running/usr/local/lib/desktop-menu/desktop-menu-apt-update force
Should update the menu in the same way as apt after installing with gdebi (well actually apt runs “desktop-menu-apt-update set” pre installation and “desktop-menu-apt-update check” after installation which you could also do)

::Thanks to everyone who suggested. Yes, I know about the package installer. It is a great tool, beyond doubt, but it contains only the popular packages. Therefore, I wanted to learn a way by which I would be able to install via gdebi and yet update the menu. So, here @Dave’s tip helped and I value the suggestions of @PPC and @olsztyn nonetheless. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this with us.
With so many different ways to get and update software it’s reasonable that not every mechanism properly updates the menus.
Thanks Dave for sharing the details of updating using the back end tools. Sometimes we can figure it out by digging through tools and code but it can be time consuming and not obvious to everyone.
Good information!
